On March 16, South Korea's ruling People's Power Party (PPP) affirmed its stance before the Court issued a verdict on President Yoon Suk Yeol.
South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol arrives for his impeachment hearing at the Constitutional Court in Seoul, South Korea, January 21. |
In a statement, Kweon Seong Dong, head of the PPP parliamentary group in the National Assembly, said he would accept the Constitutional Court's ruling in the impeachment case against President Yoon Suk Yeol, regardless of the outcome.
The stance comes as the Constitutional Court is about to rule on whether President Yoon Suk Yeol will be removed from office after being impeached for declaring martial law on December 3, 2024.
Mr. Kweon Seong Dong also called on the Constitutional Court to quickly decide on the impeachment of Prime Minister Han Duck Soo, who has been suspended from office for more than 80 days.
There is no word yet on when the court will issue a ruling on Mr. Yoon, but observers expect it to happen next week. If Mr. Yoon Suk Yeol is removed from office, South Korea will have to hold a presidential election within 60 days of the ruling. Otherwise, Mr. Yoon will continue his term until the end of May 2027.
Meanwhile, large-scale protests by both sides supporting and opposing President Yoon Suk Yeol are taking place, raising concerns about the risk of violent conflict between the two sides if the Constitutional Court continues to prolong the time to issue a verdict.
Korean observers also said that the Korean National Police Agency began to strengthen security measures since March 13 and announced that it would mobilize all its forces to ensure security and order, causing public opinion to mistakenly believe that the Court was about to issue a final verdict.
