Prepare each step carefully

In recent times, Khanh Hoa Newspaper has produced many live television programs to serve the audience, especially festival, political, and artistic programs taking place in the province. Unlike pre-recorded programs that can be edited in post-production, live television programs require everything to be in the best possible condition at the time of broadcast. For a live broadcast to be successful, careful preparation is required at every stage. According to the process, the newspaper's editors must work with the organizing unit when the program is just conceptualized to give feedback on structure and images; at the same time, coordinate with the director, cameraman, technician, etc. to organize and produce the program. Editor Dam Anh Duc said: “The plan to carry out a live program must be built at least 10 days in advance; some programs take quarters or years to complete. When broadcasting, information must be accurate to every detail, so the editor must control all content in the program. For some activities, I have to discuss many times with partners to make appropriate adjustments.”

Before performing, the television director must survey the scene to determine the location of the color car, power lines, fiber optic lines, work with the stage director... Then, build a visual script; coordinate with the editor, technical department, cameraman to perform the task, arrange the camera positions to get the best images. Each live program has at least 20 people from different departments working together. According to director Le Hong Quang - Deputy Head of the Editorial Secretary of Khanh Hoa Newspaper, when building a visual script, the director must anticipate all possible situations to handle them promptly. When the program starts airing, the entire crew must focus 100% of their efforts, not leaving their position until the end. For each program to be successful, it requires the good coordination of the entire crew. To bring the best emotions to the audience, a television director must have a good sense of music combined with professional skills to create rhythm and smoothness of the image series. When the program is on air, any problems with transmission, images, cameras, techniques, etc. can happen at any time, even if they are foreseen. Therefore, it requires a television director to have a strong mentality and calmly handle all situations.

The silent behind-the-scenes stories

Every day, Khanh Hoa Newspaper broadcasts 3 live news bulletins: AM noon, afternoon and 9 o'clock news bulletins. At the same time, the newspaper also conducts live exchanges with guests in a number of columns such as: Khanh Hoa's fragrance, Farmers' friends, For children, Law and life... With the spirit of "one person can do many things, many programs, genres", the editors of the Radio Department not only edit news articles, but also write scripts, select and contact guests, stage the program, read the content... Most importantly, despite having a lot of work and reading regularly, radio announcers must always stay healthy to have the best reading voice when on air. According to the editors, when on air, any incident can happen, so it requires the announcer to be quick-witted and know how to handle the situation. Editor Hoai Huong shared: “The most stressful and pressured is the afternoon news at 5:30 p.m. According to the regulations, the presenter must be present 30 minutes in advance, but there are news items that are only available at the last minute, so the announcer does not have time to skim the content. With our experience, we must try our best to read when entering the studio. When conducting a live report, in addition to the script, the host must have the skills to deal with unexpected situations that may arise to lead the story according to reality.”

Many times, editors encounter unexpected situations when the content of the event changes suddenly on the day of the broadcast. In order to avoid “breaking the airwaves”, editors must immediately replace it with another content in the shortest possible time. With programs that interact with guests, in addition to creating a script, the host must also predict what might happen during the conversation. Talking about her memories with the profession, editor and host Mai Phuong confided: “There are guests who normally talk very fluently, but when they go on air, they are “stuck”, only answering “yes” or “no” even though there is a script. To make the story go in depth and in the right direction, the host must skillfully suggest so that the guests can answer best. There are guests who come from far away, have little time, and have to rush to prepare everything, so the pressure to perform is even greater. When doing live broadcasts with livestreams on digital platforms, editors are required to prepare carefully so that the exchange achieves good quality in both content and image.”

Each successful live broadcast is the result of a serious team effort. It is not only a media product but also a testament to the professional work ethic and dedication of those behind the scenes.
