Doctor Truong Minh Hieu, Head of Endoscopy Department, Xuyen A Long An Hospital, said that after examination, patient T. was ordered to undergo an esophageal endoscopy for examination. During the endoscopy, doctors discovered a 35 mm long fish bone with both ends stuck to the wall of the antrum, forming a small abscess with a diameter of 2 mm.
This was the cause of the patient's abdominal pain. The endoscopists inserted an instrument into the endoscope and safely removed the fish bone.
After the doctor successfully removed the fish bone, the patient no longer had pain and was able to eat and drink normally again.
The fish bone piece removed was 35 mm long.
According to Dr. Truong Minh Hieu, recently the hospital has continuously treated many emergency cases of patients swallowing foreign objects such as pill shells, fish bones...
Normally, when choking on foreign objects such as bones, toothpicks, etc., people often try to spit, use their hands to pick out the bones, or eat large pieces of rice to swallow them down the stomach... But in reality, these actions will cause the throat lining to be scratched, infected, and inflamed. Swallowing more rice will also cause the bones to go deeper, or be embedded deeper, making it difficult to remove the bones.
For the above foreign objects, if not removed promptly, the foreign object can puncture the esophagus, causing bleeding, leading to inflammation, abscesses... in some cases, life-threatening.
"To prevent foreign objects from entering the airways, people should prepare food carefully, eat slowly, chew thoroughly, do not laugh or joke while eating, children need to have all bones removed, and if they suspect they are choking on a foreign object, they should go to the hospital for examination and proper treatment to avoid unnecessary complications," Dr. Hieu advised.
