After finishing the Literature exam - the first exam of the 2025 High School Graduation Exam according to the 2018 GeneralEducation Program, many teachers, as well as the majority of students in Ho Chi Minh City, assessed that the exam questions were close to reality, avoiding rote learning.
Avoid rote learning
As one of the earliest candidates to arrive at the exam site at Le Quy Don High School, District 3, Lang Bao Minh, a 12th grade student at Nguyen Thi Minh Khai High School, said that in normal years, the exam questions were given using literary works already available in textbooks.
However, this year the main topic revolves around the fact that every homeland's sky is the Fatherland's sky (Different skies).

“I think this exam is very close to the current situation of our country. This year's exam is against rote learning, coping learning or cramming,” Lang Bao Minh shared.
According to Bao Minh, the most difficult part of this year's exam is question 5 of the reading comprehension section, because the question simply describes the requirement to find similarities between two passages of writing by writer Nguyen Minh Chau (Different Skies - Nguyen Minh Chau) and poetry by Che Lan Vien (The Song of the Ship - Che Lan Vien).
The question did not ask how many words to write or how to do it, so when I first read it, I was a bit confused. Bao Minh predicted 8 points for Literature.
“The biggest difference in this year's exam is that it rarely uses any data from the textbook. All of the questions are mainly from outside sources. Even the text of writer Nguyen Minh Chau is taken from outside sources and does not contain any data from the textbook,” said Bao Minh.
At the same time, the 2018 Education Program teaches us how to do these types of exercises. We learn at school how to do these types of exercises, not how to analyze these exercises like before. "We learn in a way that we can do any type of exercise," Bao Minh emphasized.
Impressive exam
Mr. Vo Minh Nghia, a teacher at Nguyen Du High School, District 10, Ho Chi Minh City, said that this was an impressive exam. It is a start that shows the orientation of education towards skills and stimulates thinking ability.

In general: The test closely follows the structure of the previous sample test that the Ministry of Education and Training announced. Therefore, in a receptive mindset, students have been guided in their review by teachers and are certainly ready to receive it.
About capacity: From the material to the overall overview of the whole lesson, the capacity is moderate, suitable for the students' reading-understanding-doing time.
Although the capacity is small, the text contains many details of high literary value, and the ability to exploit questions well. From here, it can be shown that the "caliber" of the text selection of the question maker.
“I highly appreciate the selection of this corpus. Author Nguyen Minh Chau has proven his contributions and artistic talent over time, so there is no need to consider the author or his thoughts. The corpus is easy to read, has a high national appeal, and is not regionally biased, so its national reach is very high,” emphasized Mr. Vo Minh Nghia.
Regarding the questions and knowledge tested, according to Mr. Vo Minh Nghia, the exam closely follows the requirements of the 2018 General Education Program. The questions revolve around issues related to genre characteristics. The questions are simple, the questions are not tricky, students can approach the questions quickly, and are suitable for many subjects.
The knowledge tested is reading comprehension skills of short stories and writing paragraphs and articles. These are familiar skills that have been clearly defined by the Ministry of Education and Training in the current program.
Regarding the special features of this year's exam, Mr. Vo Minh Nghia said that the exam has the ability to classify students very well, worthy of an integrated exam between graduation and university entrance.

The test is very good in that it adheres to the requirements of the genre so that average and weak students can still graduate from high school (Questions 1, 2, 3 of the reading comprehension section are considered good anti-failure questions for students to easily pass).
But from questions 4 and 5 down to the paragraph and essay writing requirements, the differentiation starts to be very strong. Especially questions 4 and 5 in the reading comprehension section.
To fully answer these two questions, the test requires students to activate both their knowledge and skills in understanding the genre (story details) and to know how to analyze, evaluate, and comment on them in the content of the entire excerpt.
Question 5 is the ability to access intertextual content, in line with the requirement to expand the ability to apply. To do this, students need to have the ability to compare and analyze, and a very high understanding ability.
At 1.0 points for each question, I think it is difficult for students to achieve the maximum if they do not have good thinking ability. Therefore, in the reading comprehension section alone, there is a lot of differentiation for each group of students.
In addition, according to Mr. Vo Minh Nghia's assessment, the test was very good as it tested students' writing ability well in many situations.
“In the paragraph writing section (short writing ability), I think it is very difficult to get a high score for this paragraph because the whole question requires both literary reading and short writing skills,” said teacher Vo Minh Nghia.
In this paragraph, students first need to grasp the detailed analysis operation in the story (character's feelings). If they do not practice carefully beforehand, students can easily lose their direction: They do not know how to write, what is emotional analysis, how to choose ideas, and easily fall into the trap of leaving things blank or "chopping" randomly to get the idea.

In addition, the passage also touches on a deep analysis of a literary detail, which means it is not clearly shown as a theme, topic or inspiration but is scattered throughout the text. To know that feeling, students must read carefully, selectively and think deeply to do this passage well.
Repositioning the social mirroring function
The exam is a unified block between the literary theme and the social life theme. The Literature exam is not as literary as before, closely following the current social issues of our country. "The Literature exam clearly repositions its function of reflecting society," added Mr. Vo Minh Nghia.
Speaking of personal thoughts, Mr. Vo Minh Nghia said that this year's exam will be a warning to future generations if they still take Literature lightly and think that just by "blowing words" they can get high scores.
With the clear differentiation of this year's exam, average and weak students will find it difficult to expect to get above 6.0 points. Good and excellent students can achieve from 6.5 to 7.5 points. Above 7.5 points is only for students with good language thinking ability and a serious learning and training process.
The exam is a confident start that: The 2018 General Education Program has truly stimulated students' reading-writing-perception abilities to the maximum. Basically, it equips them with all the skills to enter their future lives.
The exam has historical significance when it creates a path to affirm that studying Literature must be a combination of: Art and life. Students from 2k8 (school year 2025-2026) must know how to care about the situation of the country, not be indifferent, not follow textbooks to be able to reach the high score as expected.
The exam not only creates a sincere reminder but also shows the heart and mind of the person who created the exam. The exam of a national exam is both in accordance with the regulations of the new program and satisfies the requirements of society for the future generation. This exam will in the future be the "standard" for all the more serious review and study of the next generations.
