Children fall ill from running around to celebrate Tet

Every Tet holiday, Ms. Nguyen Phuong Lan (living in Thanh Xuan, Hanoi ) and her family begin their journey to their paternal and maternal hometowns. For many years, the trip back and forth to celebrate Tet has made Ms. Lan's whole family sick.

"The husband's and wife's hometowns are 500km apart, but every year my husband and I want to fulfill our love for both sides, so even though it's hard, we try to do it," Lan shared.

When taking children back and forth to celebrate Tet, parents need to pay attention to their children's health (illustrative photo).

Every year, on the afternoon of the 29th of Tet, Lan and her husband would rush back to Yen Bai to buy Tet gifts with her grandparents. During the three days of Tet, busy with meals and guests, Lan often had no time to take care of her little daughter, so she ate whatever was available, skipping her afternoon nap. After three days at her grandparents' house, Lan and her husband took their daughter back to her parents' hometown in Nam Dinh.

"When she was 5 years old, she followed her parents back and forth during Tet for 5 years. Every year, she had a runny nose. One year, when she arrived at her grandmother's house, she had a high fever and coughed like a hoe, and I was extremely tired," Lan said.

This year, the couple saved money to buy a car so they no longer have to travel back and forth by bus. Ms. Lan hopes that the whole family’s health will be ensured when they can travel more proactively.

The same goes for Ms. Tran Huong Lan's family (in Ba Dinh, Hanoi). Both husband and wife are only children, so every Tet they travel back and forth to be at their paternal and maternal homes.

Lan and her husband both work in Hanoi, her mother's hometown is in Bac Ninh, her father's hometown is in Thai Binh . The family is short of people, so for the past ten years, they have arranged to stay in each place for a few days during Tet.

"Before, when I had a child, traveling was a bit easier. Now that I have a baby boy, it's more difficult. Moreover, he often gets sick, so every time I travel, he gets sick. Last year, after Tet, I had to take a few more days off because my child had a viral fever after coming back from the countryside," said Lan.

6 tips to keep your child healthy and your family happy during Tet

Sharing the concerns about children's health during the journey home for Tet of many families, Dr. Nguyen Thanh Sang, Children's Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City, recommends 6 notes for parents to remember.

Firstly, limit the time your baby spends in crowded places, wear a mask, spray your baby’s nose and throat, and sanitize your baby’s hands regularly. The journey home will inevitably involve waiting at the bus station, train station, airport, etc., so parents need to pay attention to ensuring hygiene for their baby.

"Don't take your eyes off your child, just a little carelessness and your child will run around and make a mess everywhere, especially those who are not yet steady on their feet but are hyperactive. Parents should pay attention to their children in crowded places, waiting for trains and buses," Dr. Sang advised.

Second, parents need to prepare some basic medicines: Paracetamol, oresol, allergy medicine, (D3 Zinc Iron) and micronutrients for the baby...

Third, parents need to take care of their children's diet carefully. Each child has a different microflora, so changing the diet will cause the child to have some symptoms of bloating, discomfort, even stomachache, diarrhea, vomiting... When encountering the above problems, parents should find a way to handle it, not rush to blame, blame family members, criticize the living environment, and local food. Because the problem lies in changing the microflora, thinking more positively, this is an opportunity for the child to adapt. This is absolutely not the fault of grandparents, uncles, aunts, do not because of pity for your child accidentally make the family atmosphere unhappy during the coming Tet holiday, spring.

Fourth, parents should pay attention to cakes, jams, melon seeds, chocolate, almonds, macadamia nuts, chestnuts... as these are foods that pose a potential choking hazard for children.

"Another important issue is that no matter what anyone says, you should keep the right to decide on matters related to your children. When you return to your hometown, your parents will have to receive many opinions about child care and education. However, just relax, take a deep breath, smile gently and respond to your aunts and uncles with the most gentle attitude, so that you can have a happy Tet," said Dr. Sang.

Finally, there may be some health problems in your child. Therefore, parents need to remember that when your child has a fever, a temperature above 38 degrees Celsius is a fever, or dress your child in a cool, airy way, and re-measure after 30 minutes.

For children under 6 months old, especially under 3 months old, if they have a fever, they must be hospitalized immediately, even during holidays, because 80% of the causes of fever are infections, the most feared being sepsis, meningitis...

Children over 12 months old can take 1 dose of paracetamol 15mg/kg to reduce fever and then take the child to the nearest medical facility (no need to go far to the hospital).

For children who vomit due to eating strange food, let them fast for 12-24 hours, drink plenty of water, especially electrolyte solution ORS... If vomiting, diarrhea with fever, you must see a doctor immediately.
