Proposal to spend nearly 30 trillion VND on building Can Tho Bridge 2.

The My Thuan Project Management Board has proposed the construction of the Can Tho 2 bridge, combining road and rail transport across the Hau River, with a total investment of 29,525 billion VND.

The My Thuan Project Management Board has just submitted to the Ministry of Construction a pre-feasibility study report for the investment project to build the Can Tho 2 Bridge and approach roads at both ends of the bridge. The project is proposed to be implemented in Vinh Long province and Can Tho city.

According to the proposed plan, the project's starting point is at the existing Chà Và interchange, at the end of the Mỹ Thuận - Cần Thơ expressway in Vĩnh Long province; the end point connects to the IC2 interchange, intersecting with the National Highway 91 - Nam Sông Hậu connecting route, which is also the starting point of the Cần Thơ - Hậu Giang expressway.

The Can Tho 2 Bridge spans the main channel of the Hau River, with a navigable clearance of 300 m, a scale of 6 lanes, a design speed of 100 km/h, and a lane width of 3.75 m each. The main bridge is expected to use a cable-stayed structure, without an emergency stopping lane to save costs.

The access road section includes a highway segment approximately 15 km long, combined with the upgrading of the Chà Và interchange and the IC2 interchange. The route features several medium and small bridges, designed for a full 6-lane road with a speed limit of 100 km/h and an emergency stopping lane.

The preliminary total investment for the project is 29,525 billion VND, of which construction and equipment costs are approximately 21,238 billion VND; project management and consulting costs are 2,124 billion VND; compensation, support and resettlement costs are 2,653 billion VND; the remainder is contingency costs.

The My Thuan Project Management Board has proposed using state budget funds to implement the project, with construction expected to begin in 2027 and be completed after 5 years.

The Can Tho 2 Bridge is expected to connect the My Thuan - Can Tho and Can Tho - Ca Mau expressways, part of the Eastern North-South Expressway, and also connect the two horizontal axes of Chau Doc - Can Tho - Soc Trang and Ha Tien - Rach Gia - Bac Lieu, while reducing congestion on National Highway 1A, ensuring traffic safety and creating momentum for socio-economic development in the Southwestern region.
