Landslides collapsed rural roads along the river, affecting the travel of people in An Lac Thon commune ( Can Tho city).

Landslides are complicated.

Being a locality along the Hau River, with a dense system of canals, Nhon My Commune (Can Tho City) often suffers from landslides, especially during storms. Mr. Cao Minh Thom, Chairman of the People's Committee of Nhon My Commune, explained that the riverside and canal areas in the commune have weak soil, poor load-bearing capacity, and due to the rising and falling water levels of rivers and canals, combined with the influence of the flow, landslides of river banks and concrete roads often occur, causing houses to collapse and damage, threatening the lives and property of people.

In the first months of 2025 alone, in the area of 6 hamlets of Nhon My commune including: Phung An, My Hue, An Phu Dong, Phu Tay, Truong Phu, Truong Loc, there were 17 landslides on rural roads along the Hau River and canals, with a length of 467m. The landslides collapsed and swept away 3 houses and 6 houses at high risk of landslides, forcing urgent evacuation.

Also located along the Hau River, An Lac Tay Commune (Can Tho City) is often affected by riverbank erosion. Not to mention, the dyke system protecting fruit orchards in some hamlets in the commune is also at high risk of erosion, significantly affecting people's production. Since the beginning of the year, in the two hamlets: An Cong and An Tan, there have been 37 landslides, with a length of more than 1,000m, affecting 168 households. Since then, An Lac Tay Commune has proposed the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Can Tho City to support the reinforcement of 29 sections, with a total length of more than 1,000m, and has been approved to invest in 10 sections, with a total length of more than 190m.

An Lac Thon and Ke Sach communes (Can Tho city) are also two localities along the Hau River, so landslides often occur, especially in the hamlets along the river. In the first months of 2025 alone, in An Lac Thon commune, there were 85 landslides on riverbanks and canals, with a total length of more than 2.3km; along with 13 culverts, 5 dykes and 12 locations along the canal, with a total length of more than 21km damaged and in need of maintenance and repair. In Ke Sach commune alone, there were 13 landslides, with a total length of 234m, of which 4 were serious landslides, which have now been reinforced and built, creating convenience for people to travel, transport goods and students to school.

Focus on overcoming landslides

To ensure the lives and production of people in affected areas, the People's Committee of Nhon My commune requested the city to support funding to repair and reinforce landslides. While waiting for funding support from above, the People's Committee of the commune will temporarily reinforce 7 vulnerable sections, with a total length of 143m to protect rural roads and reduce the risk of flooding due to high tides; households whose houses are affected and forced to relocate due to high risk of landslides will continue to wait for funding from the city to receive support according to regulations.

The People's Committees of An Lac Tay, Ke Sach, and An Lac Thon communes have mobilized forces to reinforce landslide sites with available local materials to limit the spread of landslides; and posted dangerous landslide warning signs to inform people when traveling on this route. For major landslide sites, the localities have sent official dispatches requesting relevant departments, branches, and sectors of the city to promptly support funding for the implementation of reinforcement projects and overcome the consequences of landslides on people's lives and production.

According to statistics from the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Can Tho City, in the first months of 2025, there were 111 riverbank landslides with a length of 2,882m in the city, affecting 50 households, with an estimated loss of more than 22 billion VND. To support localities affected by landslides, the Department of Agriculture and Environment has surveyed landslide locations and compiled proposals for support to overcome landslides from localities to develop appropriate support plans, and submit them to the People's Committee of Can Tho City for consideration and approval of funding for implementation in the coming time.
