Star concert still sells out despite gloomy economy

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên04/07/2023

No need to "go abroad" to watch BlackPink

At noon on June 26, the band BlackPink officially announced that they will bring the Born Pink tour to Vietnam, performing on the nights of July 29 and 30 at My Dinh Stadium, Hanoi . Within 30 minutes, the Korean girl group's Fanpage had more than 100,000 likes, proving the "hotness" of this event.

Previously, BlackPink fans had to fly to Taiwan, Thailand, Singapore or Indonesia to watch the show with VIP tickets costing from 6.5 to 7 million VND; the lowest-class tickets were also around 2 to 3 million VND. So although there is no official ticket price for the BlackPink show in Hanoi (it will be on sale until 12:00 on July 7), fans predict that tickets to the Born Pink show will not be outside the price range in the countries mentioned above.

The Born Pink tour brought to Vietnam to perform is good news, as Vietnamese fans do not have to fly to neighboring countries to "watch" and spend money on airfare, accommodation, etc. The more shows of international artists held in Vietnam, the more opportunities related to related industries such as event organization, tourism , stage design, sound and light, etc. have to attract customers.

According to statistics site Touring Data, up to now, BlackPink's Born Pink tour has sold about 904,000 tickets worldwide . BlackPink's revenue is up to 163.8 million USD (about 3,861 billion VND), while Born Pink still has 2 months left to end.

This revenue figure surpasses many tours of other legendary girl groups such as Spice Girls (78.2 million USD), TLC (72.8 million USD), Destiny's Child (70.8 million USD)...

Vietnamese star shows also... sold out 10,000 tickets for My Tam's Tri Am concert taking place in November 2022 at My Dinh Stadium sold out within 1 hour! Ha Anh Tuan's The Glorious Horizon concert taking place at the end of February 2023 also "sold out" after 10-15 minutes of opening for sale. Ha Anh Tuan once confessed: "Even my family couldn't buy tickets. When I told everyone to register to buy in advance, they were very indifferent because they thought I would never sell out the tickets". Vu Cat Tuong's Hom Nay Tuong 30 concert also sold out all tickets within 60 minutes. The singer herself was surprised when the website crashed 3 times because... there were too many visitors.

Le Cat Trong Ly's concerts often have "one more night", then "one more night" because the audience's demand keeps increasing. Ly's program "Vietnamese Ancient Songs 2022" initially announced 4 shows (2 in Hanoi and 2 in Ho Chi Minh City). However, the 4 shows were quickly announced to be sold out a month and a half before the show date. Then, due to the demand of the audience in Ho Chi Minh City, she announced an additional night, but it was still not enough to meet the demand, so in the end, there were 4 shows for the audience in Ho Chi Minh City.

Tickets for the 8Wonder concert featuring Charlie Puth, Ho Ngoc Ha, Ha Anh Tuan, Amee, Hieuthuhai, DJ Mie... taking place on July 22 at Hon Tre, Nha Trang were also "sold out" after less than 24 hours of going on sale.

Taylor Swift on Eras Tour in March 2023

High demand after the pandemic

Prices for many goods are falling in some parts of the world due to the economic downturn, but that doesn’t include concert tickets. Concert tickets have risen to a level that has caught the attention of economists, according to Reuters.

Fans are shelling out big bucks for tickets to see the world's biggest music acts, including the likes of Taylor Swift, Beyoncé, Bruce Springsteen and others who haven't toured in years. "People are willing to shell out money because they know they're getting a quality show," said Mario Ihieme, a Beyoncé fan in London. "Plus who knows when or if she'll do another tour after this one."

Culture and entertainment ticket prices in the UK rose 6.8% in the year to May 2023, the fastest in 30 years, with live music events in particular seeing a rise. On the retailer StubHub, the cheapest seat for Taylor Swift's Eras Tour in Seattle in July 2023 is $1,200; for her August 2023 show in Mexico City, it's $500. With demand outstripping supply, Stephen Glagola, vice president of equity research at TD Cowen, said secondary market concert ticket prices had spiked to an average of 75% to 100% of their original price.

A recent survey by US event management company Eventbrite found that 80% of consumers want to go out more this year, even as fans endure high costs and difficulties in getting tickets to major events. In the UK, about 150,000 music fans paid $431 for a ticket to the Glastonbury festival in June 2023 to see Elton John perform. Across Asia, fans flocked to see big names like Bruno Mars, Coldplay, Backstreet Boys, BlackPink... "The average ticket price for Backstreet Boys' DNA World Tour in India was between $85 and $98 per ticket," Roncon, business director of Live Entertainment in India, said of the concert in May 2023, adding that fans were happy to pay for high-quality entertainment. "Because it's worth it. When the pandemic hit hard, I think everyone was in a really bad mood and we missed events like this where people come together," said Beth Cook.

"Idolizing someone is a basic need in life and in the development of young people's personality. Familiar idols of young people are often actors, singers (performing artists), athletes, politicians, even monks, KOLs, influencers... Young people often idolize them because of their talent, or maybe because of their philosophical views on life expressed through their statements or artistic products.

Therefore, it is understandable that young people are willing to pay a lot of money for tickets to see their idols. In addition, they also have the purpose of "raising their status" in the eyes of friends and relatives when they approach their idols.
