Before the information that there will be a plan to relocate the vegetable and fish market area in Vinh Long market, many traders said that in general, they are ready to relocate. However, they want to arrange and relocate, even if it is only temporary, but it is necessary to ensure favorable factors for buying and selling, limiting "loss of revenue" for traders.
The fish market area has shown many signs of subsidence, posing a risk to safety for trading activities. |
Nearly 300 traders will relocate
The section of the banks of Co Chien River and Long Ho River (from An Binh ferry to the Long Ho river embankment) invested by Vinh Long City People's Committee, with a length of 400m, was previously announced by the Provincial People's Committee at a risk of dangerous subsidence and landslides, including the vegetable and fish selling area of Vinh Long market.
The Department of Industry and Trade has also directed the Vinh Long Market Management Board to complete the documents on the plan to relocate the market to a temporary trading location as soon as possible, to clear the area for selling vegetables and fish.
According to the Vinh Long Market Management Board, the vegetable and fish selling area with nearly 300 small traders and the board's workplace will need to be temporarily relocated to serve the construction of an embankment to prevent landslides.
According to Mr. Pham Thanh Tung - Head of Vinh Long Market Management Board, through a field survey, the majority of traders who are subject to relocation agree to relocate. However, up to now, there is still no plan for a temporary location for relocation and the board is actively coordinating with relevant departments and branches to soon have a relocation location to inform traders.
“The relocation area also has the office of the market management board. Therefore, we are urgently coordinating to find a location to relocate the market and a workplace for the board's staff to complete their tasks, while informing the traders so they can feel secure,” Mr. Tung shared.
Need a suitable place to move
Relocating the market to serve the river embankment project is necessary due to the increasing risk of landslides. However, what the traders are concerned about now is where to relocate.
And is the relocation location reasonable and convenient for buying and selling? Ms. Nguyen Thi Loi, a vegetable vendor, said that she had been informed of the market relocation and had been invited to a meeting with the market management board. In general, the vendors were forced to relocate because of safety risks.
“Relocation to a reasonable and appropriate location needs to be carefully calculated because the traders here mainly buy and sell based on acquaintances. If they relocate to an inconvenient location, it will cause a lot of difficulties for the traders. Moreover, if the traders here have a fixed and stable place to sell, they can manage capital to serve their business very well. I am afraid that if we move to a temporary place to sell, it will be difficult for them to do business and it will be difficult for them to manage capital for their business,” Ms. Loi shared.
Meanwhile, according to Ms. Nguyen Thi Le, a business owner at the fish market, this area has shown signs of erosion for a long time, so relocation to build an embankment is very necessary. However, the authorities should inform the traders as soon as possible about when and where to relocate.
“Here, we mainly buy and sell through close relationships. In case of relocation, we will lose our relationships and have difficulty finding new ones. Therefore, if we know the relocation location in advance, we can inform our customers, so it will be less difficult after the relocation,” said Ms. Le.
Meanwhile, a vegetable market trader frankly said that the products they sell are vegetables, which have a short shelf life, so they need to be placed in convenient locations for buying and selling, because if they can't sell them, it's considered a loss of capital and effort.
The proposal is to temporarily relocate us to the old vegetable stall (Chi Lang Street - PV) for convenience in trading. Because each time we relocate, we have to spend a lot of money and effort. If we cannot sell, it will be a great loss.

“The general mindset right now is that we are just waiting for the announcement of the relocation location. We need to make sure that the new location, even though it is temporary, is still convenient for both sellers and buyers, especially for importing and unloading goods,” this trader shared.
