What will the university entrance exam scores be this year?

TPO - According to teachers, the admission scores for universities in 2025 will set a new level because there are many influencing factors. It is expected that the admission scores may decrease slightly, depending on the industry.

On the afternoon of July 15, the Ministry of Education and Training announced the score distribution of 12 subjects for the 2025 high school graduation exam. According to testing experts and education managers, most subjects are assessed to have a good score distribution.

Contrary to expectations, the scores of Math and English in the high school graduation exam were evenly distributed on both sides, and were considered "surprisingly beautiful" by many experts, because previously there were reactions that the exam was long and difficult.

Prof. Dr. Nguyen Dinh Duc, Chairman of the Council of the University of Technology, Hanoi National University, shared that after the exam, many candidates were worried about the difficult Math and English exams. I thought this year's score distribution would be much lower than last year. But in fact, the score distribution is quite good.

Ms. Nguyen Boi Quynh, Principal of Viet Duc High School, Hanoi, said that after finishing the Math and English exams, she was very worried. But when the Ministry of Education and Training announced the score distribution, she was very happy.

Benchmark down?

Mr. Tran Manh Tung, Vice Principal of Newton Secondary and High School, said that this year's Math exam is highly differentiated. The graduation exam target will not be affected much, but the university entrance exam score will fluctuate greatly due to the exam score being 1 to 1.5 points lower.

With this year’s Math exam, Mr. Tung said that average students will get 5-6 points, good students will get 6-7 points, and excellent students will get 7-8 points. There will be very few 9+ points. The largest number of candidates will be around the 6 point mark.

“The English test is no less difficult, with a “challenge” level of 3 – 3.5 points. The test has a much stronger differentiation than the sample test and is surprising to both students and teachers. Therefore, the benchmark score this year will decrease, especially the combination of Math and English used for university entrance will decrease sharply,” said Mr. Tung.

According to Mr. Tung, the predicted benchmark scores of top schools will decrease by 0.5 - 1 point. Middle-ranking schools will decrease by 1 - 1.5 points. Lower-ranking schools will decrease by 1.5 - 2 points.

According to experts, based on the score distribution just announced by the Ministry of Education and Training, university admission scores based on high school graduation exam results may decrease by 2-3 points in majors considering blocks A00, B00, D01.

Mr. Vu Khac Ngoc, aneducation expert at the HOCMAI Education System, said that 2025 is the first year that 12th graders will take the high school graduation exam according to the new general education program. Therefore, the admission scores for universities will set a new level and are very difficult to predict, because there are many influencing factors.

Mr. Ngoc said that because there are many other factors involved, predicting how the difficulty of the high school graduation exam in Math or English will affect the benchmark score is not simple.

Mr. Ngoc also pointed out that, in reality, every year there is still a situation where the exam questions of one subject are assessed to be easier or more difficult than those of another subject. Meanwhile, most universities still consider high school graduation exam scores in the direction of using many combinations for one major.

If the Math and English exams are more difficult, causing the average score to be lower; but the other subjects in the combination are easier, causing the average score to be higher, then when considering admission by combination, the impact on the general standard score will still exist but will not be much.

According to Mr. Ngoc, although some candidates still take the English exam, they already have an international English certificate IELTS and can convert their test scores from these certificates in a more beneficial way.

“I have seen many cases where students only scored 8 - 8.5 points in English in the recent high school graduation exam, but those with IELTS 7.0, 7.5, when converted according to the formula set by the schools, most of them scored 10 points. Thus, they will be considered based on their IELTS score instead of their graduation score. In these cases, it is clear that the difficulty of the high school graduation English test does not affect the standard score much,” said Mr. Ngoc.

However, according to Mr. Ngoc, although it is not yet possible to predict exactly how the above new factors will affect this year's benchmark scores, he believes that the general spirit is that the benchmark scores may be 1-2 points lower than last year, depending on the industry.

For candidates at this time, Mr. Ngoc advises them not to worry too much, because the current admission principle of the Ministry of Education and Training is that candidates can register an unlimited number of wishes and there is no distinction in the order of their favorite wishes. If students have a reasonable strategy for arranging their wishes, they can rest assured about the opportunity to be admitted to their favorite universities.

After knowing the high school graduation exam scores, candidates have 10 days to submit a request for review if they want, the deadline is July 25.

Candidates can register, adjust and add university admission wishes an unlimited number of times, until 5:00 p.m. on July 28. After that, they pay the admission fee online from July 29 to 5:00 p.m. on August 5.

University benchmark scores will be announced before 5:00 p.m. on August 22.
