Throughout 2024, Kaspersky’s business security solutions detected and blocked more than 53 million Brute force attacks in the region. This is an attack method that involves trying every possible combination of characters to find the correct password or encryption key. If this process is successful, cybercriminals can capture valid user credentials, thereby easily infiltrating the system.
“Every day, Kaspersky records an average of more than 145,000 password cracking and encryption attacks targeting businesses in Southeast Asia. This number is particularly worrying given the region’s severe shortage of cybersecurity talent,” said Adrian Hia, Managing Director of Asia Pacific at Kaspersky.
Attacks in 2024 are expected to increase sharply in both Indonesia and Malaysia, with double-digit increases. There were a total of 14,662,615 brute force attacks targeting businesses in Indonesia in 2023, up 25% from 11,703,925 last year. In Malaysia, brute force attacks also increased by 14%, from 2,810,648 in 2023 to 3,198,767 in 2024.
“Cybercriminals are leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) tools to dramatically speed up password cracking and encryption cracking. Once successfully penetrated, attackers can gain remote access to the target computer system,” Hia stressed.
