The average annual failure rate (AFR) of all hard drives in the company’s inventory was 1.35% in the most recent quarter, and Backblaze will have a total of 301,120 hard drives in operation by the end of 2024.
With over 300,000 hard drives in operation, Backblaze provides a better view of their lifespan
Among Backblaze's products, the worst performing hard drive model in Q4 was the HGST 12TB hard drive (HUH7212ALN604) and three Seagate 10, 12, and 14TB hard drives (ST10000NM0086, ST12000NM0007, and ST14000NM0138), all with AFRs above 4.5%. In contrast, five hard drive models had no failures in the quarter, including the HGST 4TB (HMS5C4040ALE640) and the Seagate ST8000NM000A, ST14000NM000J, ST16000NM002J, and ST24000NM002H models with capacities of 8, 14, 16, and 24 TB, respectively.
Western Digital hard drives have the highest reliability
The Seagate ST12000NM0007 12 TB hard drive had the highest failure rate in both Q4 and full year 2024. Seagate also had high failure rates for its 10 TB and 14 TB drives, along with the HGST 12 TB model, at the end of the year. While no drive model achieved a zero failure rate in full year 2024, the Seagate 16 TB (ST16000NM002J) had only one drive failure in Q3, resulting in an AFR of 0.22% for the year.
The average failure rate in 2024 is 1.57%, an improvement from 2023 (1.7%) and is expected to continue to improve in 2025. In 2024, Backblaze installed 53,337 hard drives, averaging 26 drives per technician hour. The highest failure rates were observed for 10 TB hard drives, followed by 12 TB and 8 TB models. However, these drives were between 5 and 8 years old, resulting in increased failure rates over time.
Currently, 57% of all Backblaze drives in use are 14TB and 16TB models, which have an average lifespan of 2 to 4 years, so their failure rates are low. Among manufacturers, HGST has the highest failure rate, followed by Seagate, while drives from Toshiba and Western Digital are more reliable. Even when HGST's 12TB model is excluded from the statistics, its AFR is still lower at 0.55% than Western Digital.
