Unique Pleiku afternoon market

(GLO)- Although only lasting a few hours, the afternoon markets on the mountain town of Pleiku are still crowded with buyers and sellers. Not only is the market a place to exchange goods, it is also a place for those who come to shop to better understand the culture and residents of this highland region.

The afternoon markets on the mountain town of Pleiku were formed when ethnic minorities living in the suburbs gathered in groups to sell their homegrown products. Initially, the markets were formed along the sidewalks of main roads in the suburbs with a few people coming and going to buy and sell. Later, when the number of buyers and sellers gradually increased, the markets were moved to side roads to ensure traffic safety.

These include Pleiku Roh market (near 81 Le Thi Hong Gam, Yen Do ward), Nhao village market (in Nhao 1 village, Ia Kenh commune), Chuet village market (626 Le Duan, in Chuet 2 village, Thang Loi ward), "Dong" market (04 Nguyen Huu Tho, Ngo village, Tra Ba ward)...

It is called an afternoon market because trading activities only take place for a few hours in the afternoon, with the busiest time being from 3pm to about 5:30pm. Here, goods are not displayed on solid stalls but are arranged in rows with open aisles to facilitate shopping.

What makes the afternoon markets on the mountain town of Pleiku unique is that they still have the characteristics of a rural market because the items sold here are mostly rustic items made by the people or hunted and harvested on the fields. Common items are: snails, fish, shrimp, rice, corn, bamboo shoots, eggplant, chili, green vegetables...

Immediately after harvesting, the sellers bring the food to the market to ensure that it is fresh when it reaches consumers. The atmosphere of buying and selling here is also relaxed, with little haggling.

It has become a daily routine, every afternoon, many ethnic minority households living near the market area will harvest agricultural products together and bring them to the market to sell at a "labor-to-profit" price.

Not only contributing to income and improving life, the afternoon market has become a piece of the puzzle that carries the breath and identity of people's lives in Pleiku City. This is the reason why those who have been to the market once always come back to buy fresh, delicious food and to immerse themselves in this unique cultural lifestyle.
