Vinicius has had initial success as a team boss. |
At the end of the 2024/25 Portuguese Second Division season, Alverca finished second in the standings, thereby earning the right to play in the National Championship next season.
Alverca, founded in 1939, played in the Portuguese top flight from 1998 to 2004 but declined thereafter, having to restructure in 2006 and start again in the fourth division.
The team shocked the world by beating Sporting CP 2-0 in the 2019 Taça de Portugal, becoming only the second Third Division team in history to defeat one of Portugal’s big three. They have since improved and been promoted to the Second Division.
In February, Vinicius bought an 80% stake in Alverca for £6.7m through a group of Spanish and Brazilian investors, marking his first step into club ownership.
Vinicius and his associates aim to turn Alverca into a leading youth training centre, focusing on attracting talent from Portugal and Brazil, while improving the infrastructure to return the club to the top.
Alverca's promotion to the Portuguese National Championship is a big victory for Vinicius, in the context that other "owners" such as Kylian Mbappe (Caen), Ronaldo Nazario (Real Valladolid), have been criticized for being indifferent to the teams they own.
