According to Hanoi City Statistics, Typhoon Yagi and its aftermath caused more than 40,000 trees to break or fall. Of these, more than 13,600 urban trees were broken or fallen. The rest were trees managed by districts, towns, and cities, and trees in urban areas, agencies, and units.
A week after Typhoon Yagi , fallen trees are still strewn across the streets of central Hanoi. In the photo is an uprooted tree on Tran Nhat Duat Street (Hoan Kiem District) being handled by local residents and forces.
According to the Hanoi Department of Construction, despite mobilizing 100% of the forces and equipment of the units, along with support from the armed forces and provinces, the number of damaged trees was too large, and the relocation did not meet the requirements.
Hanoi Green Park Company said that the unit is currently receiving support from Green Park Companies of Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang , Vinh (Nghe An), Dong Hoi (Quang Binh), Son La, Quy Nhon, and Hue.
The above companies, all members of the Vietnam Parks and Trees Association, have sent forces to Hanoi to work together to clear and collect fallen trees after the storm since September 9.
Receiving an urgent order at night, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Chi (43 years old, Han Loc Construction Joint Stock Company, Da Nang) and 20 workers and experienced technical staff set out for the capital.
They brought 4 locomotives and all kinds of equipment, quickly cutting down damaged trees and clearing fallen trees in Hoan Kiem and Ba Dinh districts.
“This is the first time I have seen so many trees fall down. We replanted the trees that had no damaged roots and were likely to survive,” said Mr. Chi.
Mr. Chi said the working group was divided into many shifts, working continuously day and night. Although tired, he hopes to help Hanoi regain its green color soon.
"We have not set a date to return to Da Nang yet. We will only return home after our mission is completed," said the male worker.
In the days after storm No. 3, heavy rain in Hanoi greatly affected the work of handling fallen trees.
“Even though it rains, we still handle fallen trees as usual. After clearing the large tree trunks, we will go and dump the leaves in the evening, sometimes it takes several hours and we won’t be back until night,” said Nguyen Linh Hong (41 years old, Da Nang Green Park Company).
Elite forces from the localities said they are trying their best to clear the roads so that Hanoians can travel safely and the streets will be clean.
Authorities coordinated to handle a broken tree that fell on Thanh Nien Street on the evening of September 14. To ensure safety during the transportation of garbage and broken tree branches, the ward police organized traffic diversions.
Despite many years of experience in the profession, an employee of the Hanoi Parks and Trees Company said he had “never seen so many fallen trees”. After the storm passed, all employees of the company were mobilized to be on duty on all the streets.
"Although working continuously is very tiring, we encourage everyone to try a little harder so that we can overcome the natural disaster together," she confided.
On the morning of September 14, Hanoi City launched a campaign for all citizens to participate in general environmental cleaning and overcome the consequences of storm Yagi.
To ensure a stable life for the people, the city calls on agencies, units, member organizations, households and people to participate in cleaning up, ensuring environmental sanitation, collecting fallen trees; clearing sewers, ditches and canals; collecting waste, and spraying disinfectants to prevent epidemics.
From 8:00 p.m. on September 14, about 40 people from units from the ward police, residential groups, youth union, women's union, ward People's Committee, militia and self-defense force... of Dong Xuan ward (Hoan Kiem district) launched a general environmental cleaning campaign to overcome the damage caused by storm No. 3.
"We are determined to collect all broken and fallen tree branches tonight," said a representative of the residential group.
Hanoi authorities requested the Department of Construction and related units to ensure that all broken and fallen trees are cleared before September 20 to move to the tree rescue phase; focus on restoring infrastructure and renovating sidewalks.
