Ia O Border Guard Station: A solid shield on the Fatherland's border

Ia O Border Guard Station was established on June 30, 1975. Since its establishment, generations of officers and soldiers of the unit have overcome difficulties and effectively implemented assigned tasks. From fighting the remnants of Pol Pot who crossed the border after the days of national reunification to preventing illegal border crossings, ensuring border security, joining hands to eliminate hunger and reduce poverty and participating in consolidating the political system at the grassroots level; preventing and combating natural disasters and epidemics; effectively fighting all kinds of crimes in the border area.

Colonel Nguyen Thanh Quang, former Chief of Ia O Border Guard Station, said: In 2004, he was mobilized and appointed by the Provincial Border Guard Command to hold the position of Chief of Ia O Border Guard Station. During this period, the traffic routes in the commune were mainly dirt roads; muddy in the rain and dusty in the sun.

“In 2005, the hottest area was the situation of illegal border crossing. I remember a case where 4 people in a family in Cuc village (Ia O commune) took advantage of the darkness to row a boat across the Se San River to Cambodia. The boat sank on the river, causing 3 family members to drown. Luckily, the Border Guard discovered and rescued the girl. After that, the unit adopted her. Officers and soldiers in the unit contributed funds to raise her for education,” Colonel Quang recalled.

According to Colonel Quang, to completely resolve this situation, in addition to establishing a special project and arresting many illegal border crossers, the unit also established additional checkpoints on the border line and assigned guards day and night. At that time, the security and order situation in the area was complicated. The unit coordinated with the provincial authorities to crack down on many criminal cases to maintain stability in the area.

Lieutenant Colonel Tran Anh Tuan, a medical officer at the station, shared: In 2010, he was assigned to work at the station. At that time, because the roads in the area had not been paved, traveling was very difficult, especially during the rainy season.

“Many times when patrolling the border area or going down to the field to check on the situation, officers and soldiers in the unit had to leave their motorbikes on the side of the road and walk. There were nights when I went down to the village to examine people, the road was slippery and I fell, both me and my motorbike lying in the middle of the road, my clothes were all dirty. However, I was not discouraged and continued my journey to help the people. Currently, the road conditions are much better, making it convenient for travel,” said Lieutenant Colonel Tuan.

According to Major Huynh Ngoc Phu - Political Commissar of the Station: With the achievements over the past 50 years, the officers and soldiers of Ia O Border Guard Station have been recognized by the Command, the Command, the Party Committees and authorities at all levels and awarded many noble prizes. Hundreds of officers and soldiers in the unit have been awarded medals, titles of "Emulation Soldier", "Advanced Soldier"...

“For example, in 2022, 5 citizens in Kloong village (Ia O commune) fell into the trap of “easy work, high salary” in Cambodia. The station coordinated with the functional department of the Provincial Border Guard Command to open a special project and successfully rescued the victims. The unit was awarded a certificate of merit by the Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee for its outstanding achievements in participating in the GL622 project on combating the acts of brokerage, organization, and illegal exit to Cambodia in the border area in 2022,” said the Political Commissar of Ia O Border Guard Station.

Continue the glorious history

Half a century has passed, a long enough journey to affirm the role of Ia O Border Post on the front line of the Fatherland. The silent dedication of the soldiers in green uniforms is always remembered by the villagers where the unit is stationed.

Mr. Ksor Bong (Bi village, Ia O commune) confided: “Over the years, officers and soldiers of Ia O Border Guard Station have always been a solid support for the people in the commune. Not only maintaining border sovereignty and effectively fighting against all kinds of crimes, the Border Guard also helps villagers develop their economy, provide free medical examinations and medicine, and propagate and disseminate legal knowledge to help people raise their awareness of compliance and proactively prevent all kinds of crimes.”

Talking to reporters, the Political Commissar of Ia O Border Guard Station added: The area where the unit is stationed is large, so the force must be dispersed to carry out the task. However, with the efforts of generations of officers and soldiers, the Station has effectively carried out the task of fighting against all types of crime, firmly protecting the border area, helping people develop the economy , and eliminating bad customs. Promoting the achievements of the past 50 years, the officers and soldiers of the entire unit are determined to unite to continue the glorious tradition and successfully carry out all assigned tasks.

“In the coming time, the unit will seriously follow the instructions of superiors in assigned tasks, firmly protect national sovereignty and border security and effectively fight against all types of crimes in border areas. In addition, foreign affairs work will also be focused on, contributing to maintaining international solidarity and building a peaceful and friendly border,” Major Phu emphasized.
