May is the time when 12th grade students in the province enter the "sprint" stage of preparing for the high school graduation exam. Most of the candidates have to face high study intensity, tight schedules, stress, fatigue, anxiety... causing a lot of pressure on themselves.
On the other hand, they also have to face great expectations from their families, which inadvertently puts additional psychological burden on their shoulders.
With a huge amount of knowledge, students have to stretch themselves in a tight schedule, from regular classes, extra classes to self-study at home. Dividing time reasonably between subjects, between studying and resting becomes a difficult problem.
“To have more time to practice and focus on important exams, I had to reduce my sleep hours during the day, suspend all recreational activities, and even eat my meals in a hurry to maximize my time studying.
My schedule is almost full all day, in the morning I study at school, in the afternoon I practice exam questions, and in the evening I study at home. During this time, I study until 1-2am almost every day. There are days when I am so tired that I fall asleep on the table.
My family also has high hopes that I will pass the entrance exam to Hanoi Medical University this year. I also try very hard and hope that will come true because I really like studying medicine. However, the closer the exam date gets, the more pressure I feel" - Nguyen Thi Mai, Dong Tam ward, Vinh Yen city shared about her stressful exam preparation days.
Besides the pressure of studying, family expectations seem to be an invisible burden, silently weighing on the psychology of candidates.
Phung Thi Linh, Hoi Hop ward, Vinh Yen city, has registered her application to Hanoi National University of Education because this is her favorite school and her academic performance is quite good.
Linh shared: “My family has high expectations for me in this year's exam because my mother is a teacher, so since I was little, I have always wanted to become a teacher standing on the podium like my mother.
This year, the changes in the exam, the review schedule and my parents' expectations have made me somewhat worried about the upcoming exam. However, my parents only give me opinions and advice, not imposing. I myself will also try my best to achieve the best results and realize my dream."
Not only students, parents also share the same mental pressure during this exam season. Ms. Hoang Thu Ha, Dong Tam ward, Vinh Yen city shared: “Parents all want the best for their children, especially when they are preparing to take an exam that marks an important turning point in their lives.
I myself sometimes feel more stressed than my child. Seeing him studying day and night makes me feel sorry for him. The family also does not want to put pressure on him. To help him have the most comfortable mood to study for the exam, everyone in my family always encourages him to stay healthy, mentally well, and rest properly between stressful study hours.
Psychologists say that every parent wants their child to study better, achieve higher results, and have the opportunity to advance and have a happy life in the future. Therefore, stress during exam season is completely normal, but if not properly supported, it can affect students' mental health.
To make the high school graduation exam no longer too stressful but a gentle turning point on the path to adulthood for students, students, families, and teachers need to change and act together.
Instead of cramming, students need to develop a scientific study plan, divide time reasonably for each subject, have a specific schedule for studying, resting and entertaining. Share your worries and difficulties with friends, teachers and family because when shared, you will feel relieved, less worried and stressed.
Parents should hope, not expect, but hope that their children study seriously and try their best in their studies. When children have done their best, parents and children should be satisfied with the results.
Instead of communicating with children by "command", parents should encourage them. Parents should listen to their children more, instead of asking "how are you doing", ask "are you tired", "can mom and dad help". These questions seem simple but help children feel accompanied, give them strength, help them feel more confident when they see that their parents respect them and listen to their opinions.
The high school graduation exam is an important milestone, but it is not the only path to success. Therefore, maintaining stable physical and mental health and timely and appropriate support from family, teachers, friends and school will help students overcome the exam season easily and achieve their dreams.
