"Salvation" in difficult times
For over two months now, relatives and patients at the two departments of Intensive Care and Anti-Poison and Neurosurgery have gradually become familiar with the image of the "Companion Cabinet of Compassion" placed in the hallway leading to the department. Every morning, nurses open the cabinet to take essential items to the patient rooms, supporting difficult patients who have to undergo long-term treatment and patients without relatives.
Mr. Nguyen Van Hai (from Quang Ngai province) whose son is being treated at the Department of Neurosurgery shared: “On the first day of my son's hospitalization, he lacked many personal items. Thanks to the "Companion Cabinet of Charity", my son received thoughtful support from towels, waterproof diapers to a washbasin. I am truly grateful to the benefactors and the hospital for building this companion cabinet.”
At the Intensive Care Unit - where many patients have to undergo long-term, expensive treatment, the "Companion Cabinet" has become a "lifesaver" for patients and their families. Waterproof pads, wet wipe boxes or toilet paper packages help patients reduce their burden and save some money during their difficult times.
Mr. Nguyen Dinh Quoc, Deputy Head of the Social Work Department, Da Nang Hospital, said that in early 2025, realizing that many patients in difficult circumstances, patients without relatives, lacked essential supplies during the treatment process, the officers and employees of the Social Work Department came up with the idea of "Companion Cabinet of Compassion".
After proposing the idea, receiving the approval of the hospital leadership and receiving the attention and support of benefactors, in mid-July 2025, two "Companion Cabinets of Charity" were set up, filled with essential living items for patients. These are clean shirts, neatly folded warm blankets, new towels, waterproof diapers, wet wipes, toilet paper, plastic basins, etc. These items seem simple and small but are extremely important to patients, especially those in difficult circumstances, without relatives, and requiring long-term treatment.
The family of Ms. Nguyen Thi Ngoc Mai (resident of Cam Le ward) is one of the first benefactors to join hands to build a companion cabinet. The packages of wet wipes, toilet paper, and warm blankets donated by Ms. Mai's family have been and are being shared with disadvantaged patients, helping to give them more confidence and motivation to overcome difficulties and feel secure in their treatment.
Full of love
Not only providing daily necessities, Da Nang Hospital also has special cabinets, filled with love for patients, maintained by philanthropists. Built in 2022, for nearly three years now, the "Love Cake Cabinet" at the two departments of Artificial Kidney and Oncology is considered a "healing medicine to help patients relieve fatigue and pain after hours of treatment.
A representative of the Social Work Department said that every day the Artificial Kidney Department has more than 120 dialysis sessions, each lasting 4-5 to five hours. Witnessing the patients exhausted after treatment, the staff of the Social Work Department came up with the idea of building a "Love Cake Cabinet", located in the hallway of the department. After each dialysis session, patients have boxes of milk and packages of cakes to forget their hunger and restore their energy. Thanks to the companionship and support of hundreds of kind-hearted people, the cake cabinet is always full, helping to share thousands of boxes of milk and packages of cakes with patients with serious illnesses, adding motivation and confidence in their treatment journey.
At the Oncology Department, stemming from the reality that after chemotherapy and radiotherapy, the hair of female cancer patients gradually thins and disappears, causing many people to feel self-conscious and inferior. Sympathizing and understanding the feelings of patients, "Loving Hair Cabinet" was born to bring joy and confidence to female patients.
To have comfortable hairstyles for patients, the Social Work Department coordinates with hair salons to mobilize and receive donated hair from individuals and organizations to create hairstyles of all kinds to contribute to the hair closet. From that hair closet, female patients are given or borrowed free of charge during the treatment process. Up to now, more than 20 wigs have been given to female patients in difficult circumstances and hundreds of patients have borrowed wigs from the "Love Hair Closet" to use. Thereby, giving more strength and confidence for female patients to overcome their complexes and conquer their illness.
“We will continue to mobilize resources and install more companion cabinets and love cabinets in many departments; at the same time, research and innovate many practical models, suitable for patients in each department and room to accompany and best support patients, especially those in difficult circumstances, contributing to spreading good values in society,” said Mr. Nguyen Dinh Quoc.
