The activity aims to promptly supplement safe blood sources to meet emergency and treatment needs, in the situation of reduced blood reserves due to prolonged storms and rains.
According to the city's Red Cross, in October alone, the unit coordinated and received nearly 1,000 units of blood from emergency and unscheduled blood donations, contributing to meeting the blood transfusion needs of local hospitals.
Doctor Doan Thi Cam Nhung, Deputy Head of the Department of Hematology and Blood Transfusion (Da Nang Hospital) said that on average, the hospital needs 200 - 250 units of blood and blood products per day for emergency and treatment purposes.
"During the rainy season or the time before Tet, the amount of blood received often decreases due to interruptions in blood donation activities, while the need for treatment does not decrease. At that time, we have to proactively regulate the amount of blood used and call for more blood donors to ensure a safe reserve," said Dr. Nhung.
Vietnam needs about 2 million units of blood each year but the supply is only about 54%. Donating blood is not only a humanitarian act, but also a responsibility of each person to the community.
Donors should get enough sleep, eat a light meal before donating, avoid drinking alcohol, and avoid going hungry. After donating blood, rest in place for 10-15 minutes, drink plenty of water, and avoid strenuous exercise on the first day. Normally, the body will fully recover after 1-2 days.
