Breakthrough in personalized medicine in cancer treatment

From 2010 to present, with the remarkable development of protein research technology using high-resolution mass spectrometry and new generation DNA and RNA gene sequencing technology, these are technologies that revolutionize the field of molecular biology and medicine, allowing the detection and quantification of the expression of tens of thousands of genes or proteins in the same tissue sample, providing the basis for finding markers for earlier and more accurate diagnosis and treatment of diseases.

As a result, revolutionary progress also creates a large database, requiring different analytical, processing and evaluation skills than traditional methods. Currently in developed countries, the development of AI technology helps to process and simplify large, individual-specific biological data systems, helping us better understand the pathogenesis, disease manifestations and support clinicians to make objective, scientific and accurate decision-making options based on highly quantitative test evidence.

Speaking at the workshop, Colonel, Associate Professor, Doctor Nguyen Thanh Tuyen, Director of Hospital 19-8, said that cancer is a topical issue, so personalized treatment methods are increasingly receiving attention. Immunotherapy has been considered a breakthrough in cancer treatment.

Individualized factors in treatment involve many factors such as genes, environmental influences in daily life, other influencing factors, etc. When examining a patient, the doctor must comprehensively understand these factors of the patient, the risk factors, and from there, come up with the most appropriate treatment regimen for each patient.

The workshop aims at 3 major goals: Helping the medical team access and better understand the role of gene and protein research in modern medicine, thereby promoting its application in clinical practice; creating a bridge of cooperation between researchers, scientists and clinicians to promote the transfer of technology and research results into practical treatment; affirming the hospital's development orientation to become a prestigious center for research, training and international cooperation in the field of personalized medicine and cancer treatment.

"We organized the workshop with the aim of providing doctors and medical staff of the People's Public Security with access to advanced knowledge about personalization in treatment, especially in the treatment of cancer," Dr. Tuyen shared.

A lot of scientific information was shared at the conference.

Currently, 19-8 Hospital is collaborating with SETA Vietnam Joint Stock Company and some Japanese medical facilities with leading experts to conduct in-depth research on immunotherapy in cancer. Research results show that this therapy is very effective in treating some types of cancer such as lung cancer and colorectal cancer.

"At Hospital 19-8, we treat patients with very effective immunotherapy. There are patients with stage 3 colon cancer that have metastasized, but thanks to a combination of many treatments, especially immunotherapy, the patients still have a very good quality of life. The same goes for patients with lung cancer," said Dr. Tuyen.

The Director of 19-8 Hospital said that in cooperation with Japanese partners, patients treated here will have their cells sent to Japan for filtering, then transferred to Vietnam for treatment. Japanese partners support part of the cost of treating patients using this method, so the cost of each treatment is lower than usual, helping many patients have access.
