In 2024, Germany imported at least 68.6 tons of uranium from Russia, up 70% from 2023. Uranium is used to run nuclear power plants, a sector that Europe's largest economy officially abandoned in 2022.

The uranium shipments are sent to the Advanced Nuclear Fuels (ANF) plant in Lingen, Germany, which specializes in manufacturing nuclear fuel rods. ANF is a subsidiary of Framatome, France's leading nuclear equipment manufacturer.
Although the European Union (EU) has imposed sanctions on many sectors of the birch tree, uranium remains outside the embargo list. The reason is that the 27-member bloc has not issued a ban on the import or export of nuclear fuel for peaceful purposes.
This allowed Moscow to continue to maintain uranium supplies to Berlin.
Germany confirmed that this import is still legal under current EU regulations.
However, experts have noted that although the European economic powerhouse has abandoned nuclear energy, importing uranium from Russia amid political tensions has sparked controversy. "This is a manifestation of inconsistency," some observers said.
* Rosatom CEO Alexey Likhachev, Russia is building Europe's safest nuclear power plant in Hungary.
"We are honored to build a nuclear reactor for Europe. We will do everything possible to make it the most beautiful, most modern and safest plant in the EU. The company is preparing to pour the first concrete blocks," the director said.
The project will add two new reactors, helping Hungary reduce its dependence on natural gas imports for electricity generation.
