According to Neowin , the Windows generational transition is accelerating strongly in the global gaming community. As the official end of support for Windows 10 approaches in October this year, the latest data shows that gamers are actively upgrading to Windows 11, making it the new dominant platform.

Windows 11 is being actively switched to by users

Valve’s April 2025 Steam Hardware and Software Survey paints a clear picture of this trend. Windows 11 is now available on 57.84% of Windows PCs surveyed, an impressive 2.5 percentage point increase in just one month. This is a sign of the growing acceptance of Microsoft’s latest operating system among gamers.

On the other hand, its predecessor Windows 10 fell below the 40% mark for the first time, to 38.09% of the market (down 2.49 percentage points). Although Windows 10 is expected to continue to be supported by some game developers after October 2025, the gradual departure of users is inevitable. Overall, the Windows ecosystem still dominates Steam with 96.1% of the market share, far surpassing competitors such as Linux (2.27%) and macOS (1.62%).

In addition to changes in operating systems, the April 2025 Steam survey also revealed interesting shifts in gamers' hardware choices, including:

  • Graphics card (GPU): The long-dominant Nvidia RTX 3060 has been officially dethroned by the newer laptop version of the RTX 4060, which is now the most popular GPU with 4.8% of users. The RTX 3060 has dropped to second place (4.57%), followed by the desktop version of the RTX 4060 (4.35%).
  • Configuration: Other popular hardware options include 16GB of RAM (43.86%), a 6-core CPU (30.26%), and 8GB of VRAM (34.25%). Notably, the most popular primary drive size is still under 250GB, and Full HD (1,080p) displays continue to be the resolution of choice for the majority of gamers (55.27%).

These figures show that the gaming community is actively embracing Windows 11 and new hardware technologies, especially RTX 40 series graphics cards, shaping the standard gaming configuration for 2025.
