Despite the short-term adjustment in coffee prices, Vietnam's coffee exports in the first quarter of 2025 still achieved impressive results. According to the General Department of Customs, coffee export turnover reached 2.8 billion USD, up nearly 46% over the same period despite a decrease in output. This is the first time that coffee has surpassed seafood (2.3 billion USD) in export value and is only behind the wood industry in the group of agricultural, forestry and fishery products.

Previously, in early April, after the US announced its plan to impose tariffs, domestic coffee prices in the Central Highlands region dropped sharply from VND132,000/kg to VND118,000/kg. Export prices in the international market also fell sharply, with Robusta and Arabica coffee losing USD1,251 and USD2,356 per ton, respectively, compared to their peak.

However, after April 10, when the US announced a 90-day tax suspension, the coffee market quickly recovered. In the Central Highlands provinces of Dak Lak, Gia Lai and Lam Dong, coffee prices returned to VND132,000/kg. On the London and New York exchanges, Vietnam's coffee export prices have also increased steadily and are now approaching their previous highs.

World coffee prices today

Coffee prices on the world market fell sharply on both exchanges:

Robusta Coffee (London):

Delivery in May 2025: Down 135 USD/ton, to 5,253 USD/ton.

Delivery in July 2025: Down 102 USD/ton, to 5,277 USD/ton.

Arabica Coffee (New York):

May 2025 delivery: Down 0.55 cents/lb, to 375.5 cents/lb.

July 2025 delivery: Down 1.2 cents/lb, to 372.6 cents/lb.

Global coffee prices have started to fall again after reaching a short-term peak in recent sessions. The main reason is that hedge funds and investors are taking advantage of profit-taking after a long-term increase. In addition, market sentiment is also affected by cooling inflationary pressures and concerns about consumption demand in the US.

The recent strengthening of the US dollar has also been a factor that has put pressure on coffee prices. On the morning of April 18, the US Dollar Index (DXY), which measures the strength of the greenback against six major currencies, rose slightly to 99.40. This increase occurred in the context of the weakening of the Euro after the European Central Bank (ECB) continued to cut interest rates for the seventh time in a year.

According to expert Nguyen Quang Binh, the global coffee market's downward adjustment is understandable after seven consecutive sessions of increase. The main reason comes from the increase in inventories on international exchanges. In addition, many investors want to take profits and limit risks before the 2025 Easter holiday.
