This morning (May 25), at the National Funeral House, No. 5 Tran Thanh Tong, Hanoi, the memorial service for former President Tran Duc Luong was solemnly held.

Colonel Nguyen Thien Hoc, Head of the Army Ceremonial Unit, Ministry of National Defense, announced that the funeral procession for former President Tran Duc Luong has begun.

Mr. Nguyen Hoa Binh - Member of the Political Bureau, Standing Deputy Prime Minister - Head of the Organizing Committee for the funeral of former President Tran Duc Luong - invited representatives of the family, leaders and former leaders of the Party, State, Vietnam Fatherland Front, and other comrades to walk around the coffin to bid farewell to Comrade Tran Duc Luong as he was laid to rest.

7:20 AM: In Quang Ngai, delegates, provincial leaders, and citizens expressed their condolences for Comrade Tran Duc Luong - former member of the Politburo and former President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam - and observed a minute of silence.

Mr. Tran Tuan Anh expressed: “In boundless emotion and immeasurable grief, on behalf of my mother, my sisters, my wife, and all the children and grandchildren in the family, I would like to express my deepest gratitude to all of you who came to attend the memorial service and bid farewell to my father - Comrade Tran Duc Luong - in the final moments of his life.”

Mr. Tran Tuan Anh expressed his gratitude to the Central Committee of the Party, the Politburo, the Secretariat, the National Assembly, the President, the Government, and the Central Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front for solemnly organizing the State Funeral to commemorate and honor the immense contributions of former President Tran Duc Luong to the revolutionary cause of the Party and the nation. Mr. Tran Tuan Anh also expressed his deep gratitude to the leaders and former leaders of the Party and State, the central and local ministries, departments, and organizations, diplomatic agencies, and domestic and international organizations that sent wreaths, condolences, and attended the funeral and farewell ceremony for former President Tran Duc Luong.

7:15 AM: Leaders of the Party and State, along with the people, expressed their condolences for Comrade Tran Duc Luong - former member of the Politburo and former President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam - and observed a minute of silence.

7:05 AM: Politburo member and President Luong Cuong - Head of the Funeral Committee - delivers the eulogy.

“The passing of Comrade Tran Duc Luong is a great loss to the Party, the State, the people, and his family. Today, in boundless sorrow, the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam, the National Assembly of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, the President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, the Government of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, the Central Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front, together with compatriots and soldiers nationwide, our compatriots abroad, international friends, and his family, solemnly hold the funeral and farewell ceremony for Comrade Tran Duc Luong – a highly respected leader, a shining example of studying and following the example, ethics, and style of Ho Chi Minh, a steadfast communist party member – to his final resting place,” – stated the eulogy for former President Tran Duc Luong, read by President Luong Cuong.

Politburo member and President Luong Cuong, head of the Funeral Committee, delivered the eulogy.

President Luong Cuong stated that, in his practical work, former President Tran Duc Luong was a leader with firm political resolve, extensive experience, and unwavering commitment to the goals of national independence and socialism. He creatively applied Marxism-Leninism and Ho Chi Minh Thought, remained loyal to the Party's platform and guidelines, and served the national interest. He possessed foresight, decisiveness, composure, caution, dedication, and wisdom. He consistently strived to find solutions to lead and guide the successful implementation of the Party's policies and guidelines, the State's laws and regulations, and cared for the improvement of the people's material and spiritual lives.

7:00 AM: Memorial service for former President Tran Duc Luong

Mr. Nguyen Hoa Binh - Member of the Political Bureau, Standing Deputy Prime Minister - Head of the Organizing Committee for the Funeral of former President Tran Duc Luong - presided over the memorial service.

"In profound sorrow, we gather here to bid farewell to Comrade Tran Duc Luong - former President of Vietnam - as he is laid to rest," said the head of the funeral organizing committee.

At the same time, a memorial service for former President Tran Duc Luong was held at the Reunification Hall (Ho Chi Minh City).

According to Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee Nguyen Van Duoc, during the funeral ceremony held in Ho Chi Minh City, more than 2,600 people from 428 delegations representing agencies, organizations, units, localities, and citizens came to pay their respects to former President Tran Duc Luong.

According to statistics, as of yesterday (May 24th), 655 delegations from the Party, State, Vietnam Fatherland Front, numerous officials, Party members, people from all walks of life, and diplomatic delegations, totaling nearly 9,500 people, have visited to pay their respects to former President Tran Duc Luong, expressing their gratitude, respect, and sorrow for a leader who made immense contributions to the glorious revolutionary cause of the Party and the entire nation.

6:50 AM: Preparations for the memorial service are underway inside the National Funeral Home.

The coffin of former President Tran Duc Luong is laid in state at the National Funeral Home, No. 5 Tran Thanh Tong Street, Hanoi.

Placed in the most prominent position, in the center of the ceremonial platform, the coffin of former President Tran Duc Luong was draped with the bright red national flag.

In front of the coffin of Comrade Tran Duc Luong, above the ceremonial platform, was the national flag bordered with a black ribbon, prominently displaying the words "Deeply mourning Comrade Tran Duc Luong, former member of the Politburo, former President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam" and a portrait of him.

Preparations for the memorial service for former President Tran Duc Luong have been meticulously underway since early morning at the National Funeral Home.

6:40 AM: According to a reporter from Lao Dong newspaper, the weather in Hanoi this morning (May 25th) was cool with low temperatures. At 6:40 AM, the temperature was recorded at 23 degrees Celsius.

According to forecasts from the National Center for Meteorological and Hydrological Forecasting, on May 25th, a reinforced cold front will penetrate deeper and continue to affect the Northern region. In Hanoi, the weather will be cool with minimum temperatures generally ranging from 21-23 degrees Celsius.

The memorial service for former President Tran Duc Luong was held solemnly at 7:00 AM on May 25, 2025.

At the same time, memorial services for Comrade Tran Duc Luong were also held at the Thong Nhat Hall in Ho Chi Minh City and at the T50 Hall of the Quang Ngai Provincial Military Command, 142 Le Trung Dinh Street, Quang Ngai City.

The funeral will be held at 3:00 PM on the same day at the family cemetery in Pho Khanh commune, Duc Pho town, Quang Ngai province.

During the two days of the State Funeral for former Politburo member and former President Tran Duc Luong (May 24 and 25, 2025), government agencies, offices, and public places will fly flags at half-mast and will not organize any entertainment activities.

According to the special communiqué, Comrade Tran Duc Luong - former member of the Politburo, former President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, former Chairman of the National Defense and Security Council, was born on May 5, 1937; his birthplace is Pho Khanh commune, Duc Pho district (now Duc Pho town), Quang Ngai province; his permanent residence is at house number 298, Van Phuc street, Lieu Giai ward, Ba Dinh district, Hanoi.

He joined the revolution in February 1955; became a member of the Communist Party of Vietnam on December 19, 1959; a member of the Central Committee of the Party for the 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, and 9th terms; a member of the Politburo for the 8th and 9th terms; a member of the Standing Committee of the Politburo for the 8th term; Vice Chairman of the Council of Ministers from February 1987 to August 1992; Deputy Prime Minister from September 1992 to August 1997; from September 1997 to June 2006, he was President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, Chairman of the National Defense and Security Council for the 10th and 11th terms; and a member of the National Assembly for the 7th, 8th, 10th, and 11th terms.

After a period of serious illness, despite the dedicated care and attention from the Party, the State, a team of professors and doctors, and his family, due to his advanced age and severe illness, he passed away at 10:51 PM on May 20, 2025 (corresponding to April 23 of the Year of the Snake), at his home, at the age of 88.

Throughout more than 50 years of revolutionary activity, Comrade has made immense contributions to the glorious revolutionary cause of the Party and the nation. He has been awarded the Gold Star Order, the 65-Year Party Membership Badge, and many other prestigious orders, medals, awards, and titles by the Party and the State.

The passing of Comrade Tran Duc Luong is a great loss to the Party, the State, the People, and his family. To express our sorrow and remembrance of Comrade Tran Duc Luong, the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam, the National Assembly of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, the President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, the Government of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, and the Central Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front have decided to organize his funeral with the solemn ceremony of a State funeral.
