Nguyen Thi Oanh (right) and Le Thi Tuyet completely dominated the women's 5,000m event at the 33rd SEA Games.
For quite some time, this event has been dominated by Nguyen Thi Oanh . Since the 2017 SEA Games, the athlete born in 1995 has consistently won the gold medal. In the competition on the evening of December 13th, Nguyen Thi Oanh continued to demonstrate her number one position, even though she was briefly overtaken by her younger competitor, Le Thi Tuyet.
From the very beginning, the two Vietnamese track and field athletes quickly pulled ahead, leaving the other competitors behind. After only about two laps, they had rapidly broken away from the pack. The race then became an internal battle between the Vietnamese athletes.
Halfway through the race, Le Thi Tuyet unexpectedly pulled ahead. She maintained this position for quite some time, while Nguyen Thi Oanh was close behind. However, in the final 400 meters, with her class and experience, the defending champion surged ahead powerfully. She quickly pulled away from Le Thi Tuyet thanks to her superior sprinting ability.
Nguyen Thi Oanh finished first with a time of 16 minutes 27.13 seconds. Le Thi Tuyet came in second with a time of 16 minutes 34.6 seconds. The two embraced and celebrated, while the third-place finisher was still far behind. That athlete was Gagnao Joida from the Philippines, who only managed to finish the race in 17 minutes 9.87 seconds.
Nguyen Thi Oanh's overwhelming victory, along with Le Thi Tuyet's silver medal – her first time competing in the women's 5,000m at the SEA Games – demonstrates that this remains a strong event for Vietnamese athletics.

When Le Thi Tuyet crossed the finish line, the athletes behind her were still competing fiercely. The last two athletes even needed at least one more lap to complete the race.
