Areca nut price 20,000 VND/kg, Kien Giang farmers excitedly make a lot of money

On the morning of November 8, Mr. Du Van Thai - Farmers who grow areca palms intercropped with pineapples in An Lac hamlet, Binh An commune, Chau Thanh district - said that they grow areca palms mainly for shade and sun protection for pineapples. The areca palms grown by locals are the round-fruited areca palm variety, sold at markets or for weddings and betel chewing.

Although areca nut is not the main crop, traders are currently buying areca nut at about 20,000 VND/kg, many times higher than the same period in 2023, making Mr. Thai and local people very excited.

"Areca is at the end of the season, and there are not many fruits left. My 2 hectares of areca mixed with pineapples this year will yield an estimated 20 tons and sell for 20,000 VND/kg, earning 400 million VND," Mr. Thai said happily.

People in Chau Thanh district (Kien Giang) grow round areca nuts for weddings and betel chewing.

Areca nut pickers will be paid 3,000 VND/kg

According to Tuoi Tre Online , the atmosphere of areca nut harvesting in the locality is bustling. Right now, areca nut pickers are also pocketing millions.

Mr. Ly Van Dat (in Binh An commune), who specializes in picking areca nuts for hire, said that he is paid 3,000 VND/kg of areca nuts by his hirers. Therefore, every day he diligently picks 1 ton of areca nuts and earns 3 million VND, so he can live comfortably.

According to the People's Committee of Binh An Commune (Chau Thanh District), the area of ​​areca palm cultivation in this commune is about 1,243 hectares, of which An Lac Hamlet has the largest area with 427 hectares. Thereby, areca palm contributes to increasing income for local people.

Although it is a shade tree for bushes, the areca tree contributes to increasing income for people in Chau Thanh district (Kien Giang).
