Mrs. Nguyen Thi Ly's family got rich from raising buffalo and cows.

Once a pure farmer, attached to the low-lying fields and an unstable life from rice, Ms. Nguyen Thi Ly in Trung Ha village, Nam Tan commune (Nam Sach, Hai Duong ) and her husband switched to raising buffaloes and cows. This was a turning point in Ms. Ly's family's journey to wealth.

Before 2010, Ms. Ly’s family only raised small-scale cattle. Realizing the high economic efficiency and the right time when the locality encouraged the conversion of crop and livestock structure, she decided to invest in buying 10 breeding buffaloes and renting land along the dike, low-lying land not favorable for rice cultivation, to grow elephant grass and specialized grass varieties for livestock.

Not afraid of hardship, the couple took care of the livestock like “children”, accumulating capital and experience over the years. Thanks to their perseverance, the herd of buffalo and cows has continuously grown. Currently, Mrs. Ly’s family’s herd of buffalo and cows has reached nearly 100 (mainly breeding buffalo and cows). Each year, the herd gives birth to 35-40 healthy calves. The grass growing area rented and purchased by the couple has expanded to 10 hectares.

Every day, the couple wakes up early to cut grass for the buffalo and cows to eat. The main source of food is fresh grass grown year-round. During the cold winter (November, December and January), she buys more straw after the harvest to supplement the livestock's diet.

All manure is thoroughly treated by Ms. Ly using a biogas system with a volume of nearly 1,000 m3 to create compost to fertilize the grass, closing the cycle effectively, sustainably and environmentally friendly. The barn is also kept clean regularly.

Mrs. Ly pays special attention to veterinary work. Her cattle are fully vaccinated according to the instructions of veterinary staff. Thanks to that, for over 15 years, her buffalo and cows have never encountered a dangerous epidemic.

Each year, her family sells about 30-40 calves, priced at about 12-15 million VND/head, sometimes up to 40 million VND/pair of mother buffalo. The total annual income is stable from several hundred million VND or more.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Ly has become a good farmer and businesswoman, respected by people in and outside the commune. Her closed, sustainable livestock farming model not only brings high income but also protects the environment.
