In the North, the price of live pigs decreased by VND1,000 in Hanoi and Thai Nguyen to VND67,000/kg; while Ninh Binh and Ha Nam only had VND66,000/kg, the lowest in the region as well as the whole country at present. Other provinces and cities have a price of live pigs of VND67,000/kg, with Bac Giang having the highest price of VND68,000/kg.
Pork and hog market cools down before big holiday
In the Central and Central Highlands regions, the price of live pigs in Dak Lak decreased by VND1,000 to VND72,000/kg. Thanh Hoa, Nghe An and Ha Tinh provinces maintained the lowest price in the region at VND67,000/kg. In contrast, the highest price of VND75,000/kg was still maintained in Lam Dong and Binh Thuan ; the remaining provinces and cities commonly ranged from VND69,000 - VND73,000/kg.
In the South, the livestock capital Dong Nai and localities with high prices such as Tay Ninh, Tien Giang, Ben Tre all decreased by 1,000 VND to 75,000 VND/kg. The remaining provinces and cities remained stable at a high level of 74,000 - 75,000 VND/kg.
The average price of live pigs nationwide is 70,600 VND/kg. The price of live pigs suddenly turned around when the whole country was preparing to enter a long holiday and consumer demand was increasing. According to experts, the reason is believed to be due to the continuous increase in live pig prices recently, especially in the South, where it is commonly up to 74,000 VND/kg compared to last year's average of only 67,000 VND/kg.
In the long term, according to the Dong Nai Livestock Association , by the end of March, the province's total pig herd was only over 1.9 million, down 8% compared to the same period last year. The total herd decreased because the epidemic situation affected the increase and restoration of herds as well as the implementation of the policy of relocating livestock facilities according to the new orientation. This caused the supply of live pigs to not meet the demand, and the price of live pigs continuously remained higher than the same period of previous years.
In Ho Chi Minh City, the number of pigs arriving at wholesale markets is about 4,600 - 4,700/day. The price of pork pieces ranges from 86,000 - 91,000 VND/kg depending on the quality. Meanwhile, in supermarkets and traditional markets, the common retail price of meat also fluctuates slightly, such as pig tail 230,000 VND/kg, pork chops 115,000 VND/kg, thigh meat 140,000 VND/kg, pork belly 215,000 VND/kg, pork belly without ribs 260,000 VND/kg.../.
