The entire North today witnessed the price of live pigs fluctuating within the range of 47,000 VND/kg to 49,000 VND/kg.
Central region pig price
The Central Highlands region continued to have no price fluctuations in any locality this morning. Specifically, the provinces of Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, Quang Tri, Hue, Da Nang , Quang Ngai and Dak Lak maintained the level of 47,000 VND/kg.
In Ha Tinh and Gia Lai, the transaction price remains at 46,000 VND/kg, the lowest in the region. Khanh Hoa and Lam Dong recorded prices of 48,000 VND/kg and 49,000 VND/kg, respectively. The price of live pigs in the Central Highlands is currently in the range of 46,000 VND/kg - 49,000 VND/kg.
Southern pork prices
In the South, the trend of price stability continues to appear in all provinces today. According to records, Dong Nai and Ca Mau still maintain the highest level in the region as well as the whole country with 50,000 VND/kg.
Tay Ninh, An Giang, Ho Chi Minh City and Can Tho are all hovering around 49,000 VND/kg; Dong Thap trades at 48,000 VND/kg; and Vinh Long purchases at 47,000 VND/kg, the lowest in the South. Thus, the price of live pigs in the South is fluctuating between 47,000 VND/kg - 50,000 VND/kg.
The live hog market on November 14 generally continued to record a horizontal trend across the three regions of the North, Central and South, with the highest level at 50,000 VND/kg in Dong Nai and Ca Mau, while the lowest threshold was 46,000 VND/kg in Ha Tinh and Gia Lai.
Amidst weak purchasing power, Mr. Nguyen Kim Doan - Vice President of Dong Nai Livestock Association said that the current price of 46,000-47,000 VND/kg is "only for reference", when many households with overweight pigs are forced to sell them for less than 43,000 VND/kg; at the same time, production costs exceed 50,000 VND/kg due to increased feed and veterinary medicine, causing most farmers to suffer heavy losses.
Excess supply continues to be the main reason for the sharp price drop. After a period of high domestic pork prices, many households have rushed to re-stock, causing a large number of over-aged pigs to be sold at the same time. In addition, imported meat has doubled compared to the same period last year, with prices only 50-70% of domestic products, making the level of competition even more fierce.
Figures from the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment show that the total pig herd nationwide at the end of October reached 26.4 million, a slight increase of 0.1% over the same period; some provinces such as Dong Nai, Tay Ninh and Son La still maintained production thanks to biosafety farming models, while many other localities cautiously restored their herds, causing an imbalance between supply and demand.
Experts warn that the domestic livestock industry could face a new crisis cycle if pork prices do not recover soon and imports are not adjusted. To reduce the pressure, experts suggest stepping up communication on food safety, stimulating domestic consumption and reviewing import policies to protect domestic production.
