* According to statistics from the Department of Animal Husbandry, in June 2023, there were 22 outbreaks of African swine fever in 6 provinces nationwide. The total number of pigs destroyed was 409.
Since the beginning of the year, 172 outbreaks have occurred in 34 provinces nationwide; the total number of pigs destroyed is 6,277.
Currently, the country has 39 outbreaks in 16 districts of 11 provinces that have not passed 21 days. Although the disease is still present, in fact, compared to the same period in 2022, the number of outbreaks has decreased by 79.64%; the number of pigs that had to be destroyed at outbreaks has also decreased by 85.47%.
It is estimated that the total pig herd in the country as of the end of June was about 26 million, an increase of about 2.5% over the same period in 2022; the output of live pigs for slaughter in the first 6 months of the year is estimated at 2,325,600 tons, an increase of 6.5% over the same period in 2022.
The total herd is increasing, but in terms of proportion, household farming is decreasing.
According to the Department of Animal Husbandry, due to the long-term increase in input material prices (animal feed, other costs, etc.) and unstable output product prices, livestock farmers' profits have decreased sharply. Many small-scale livestock farmers cannot cover their losses and have had to stop raising livestock.
Meanwhile, the business sector and production chains tend to expand production when output prices increase. The leader of the Dong Nai Livestock Association estimates that the pig herd of household scale only accounts for 20-30% compared to the scale of enterprises.
