In some localities such as An Giang, Dong Thap and Tien Giang, the rice supply is moderate, the quality of the rice is mixed with many impurities, so the warehouse must choose carefully before buying.
However, the price level remains stable. Some areas such as Sa Dec or An Cu canals have recorded a steady flow of goods, but purchasing power has slowed down due to the poor quality of new rice.
Raw rice prices in the region continued to increase. CL 555 raw rice reached VND 8,200 - 8,300/kg after increasing by VND 300. OM 18 rice is currently at VND 10,200 - 10,400/kg, an increase of VND 100.
Other varieties such as Jasmine, OM 380, OM 5451 and IR 504 also remained stable or increased slightly, ranging from 7,700 to 18,000 VND/kg depending on the variety.
In retail markets in An Giang, rice prices have generally stabilized. Regular retail rice has dropped by VND1,000 to VND13,000 - 15,000/kg. Fragrant rice and special varieties such as Huong Lai, Jasmine, Japanese rice... range from VND18,000 to VND28,000/kg depending on the type.
The glutinous rice market maintained a sideways trend. Common prices remained stable, with IR 4625 (fresh) sticky rice at around VND7,700 - 7,900/kg, while 3-month dried sticky rice remained at VND9,600 - 9,700/kg.
Prices of by-products such as rice husk, bran, and broken rice have also increased slightly. Rice husk is currently priced at 900 - 1,150 VND/kg, fragrant broken rice and broken rice 3-4 fluctuate around 7,600 VND and 6,800 VND/kg, while the price of bran is commonly at 6,300 - 6,400 VND/kg.
Regarding rice prices, transactions in many places are quite slow because the quality of the first crop rice is not high. Some areas such as Long An, Soc Trang, An Giang or Can Tho all recorded weak purchasing power and little price fluctuation.
However, according to the Department of Agriculture of An Giang province, some varieties such as OM 5451, Dai Thom 8 or fresh OM 18 increased slightly from 50 - 200 VND/kg. In general, rice prices in the region remained stable, commonly from 5,800 to 7,050 VND/kg depending on the type.
In the export market, Vietnamese rice prices continue to remain stable today. According to information from the Vietnam Food Association (VFA), the price of 100% broken rice is currently at 317 USD/ton, while 25% broken rice is 367 USD/ton. The export price of 5% broken rice remains at 394 USD/ton.
Meanwhile, Thailand's 5% broken rice increased slightly by 1 USD, reaching 394 USD/ton, equal to Vietnam's. The price of the same type of rice from India remained unchanged, at 376 USD/ton. Pakistan alone recorded a decrease of 1 USD, bringing the price of rice down to 389 USD/ton.
According to Reuters, Thailand's rice exports in the first quarter of this year fell sharply by 30% compared to the same period last year, reaching only 2.1 million tons. The reason is said to be because many countries have suspended imports in the context of India resuming rice exports after a period of restrictions.
The Thai Rice Exporters Association said total exports for the year could be lower than the forecast of 7.5 million tonnes. However, Thai businesses are hoping for more orders from the US market, after the Trump administration announced a 90-day suspension of tariffs.
Thailand is currently the world’s second-largest rice exporter. However, that position could be threatened if the US decides to impose tariffs higher than 10%, which would be detrimental to Thai businesses.
On the other hand, India is witnessing a strong breakthrough in the agricultural sector. According to a report from Financial Express, the country's agricultural and processed food exports have increased by 13% in the 2024-2025 fiscal year, reaching a total value of more than 25.14 billion USD. Of which, rice exports alone increased sharply by 20%, reaching more than 12.47 billion USD compared to 10.41 billion USD in the same period last year.
The recovery comes after the Indian government eased restrictions on rice exports from September 2024, on the back of forecasts of bumper harvests and high inventories. Restrictions, including minimum export prices, have now been completely lifted, paving the way for Indian rice to make a strong comeback in the global market.
