• Tran Van Thoi district reviews information on falling rice prices
  • Rice prices are 500-2,000 VND/kg higher than the same period last year.

Mr. Nguyen Van Quan, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment, said: “ World rice prices have decreased compared to the past two years. According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, the current low rice prices are due to India lifting the ban on rice exports; some markets such as Indonesia and the Philippines have also limited rice imports because they imported quite a lot in previous years; along with the good harvest situation in some countries, the current price of Vietnamese rice is low.”

According to Mr. Quan, since before Tet, rice prices have continued to fall sharply, and thus rice prices have fallen accordingly. According to records, farmers' rice yield is equivalent to about 5.5 tons/ha, in some places 6.5 tons/ha. Rice growers have a good harvest, but the current rice purchase price is from 5,800 to 7,600 VND/kg. The sharp drop in rice prices has affected rice growers, but according to the assessment, farmers have not yet reached the point of loss.

Currently, traders still buy rice from the people. Many people sell it to pay for the crop, while some people store it to wait for the price.

"This year, the purchasing situation of traders is also limited, there was a time when they did not buy rice from the people. However, currently, traders have started to buy again, but the purchasing power is only at an average level, not as high as last year. Therefore, the selling of rice by people is sometimes slow, but it ensures that there is not a large amount of rice left in the people's hands," Mr. Quan added.

As the locality with the largest rice area in the province, in the last winter-spring crop, the entire Tran Van Thoi district planted nearly 29,000 hectares. Up to this point, farmers have harvested over 27,800 hectares, reaching 96%; the average yield is 6.36 tons/ha; the total harvested rice output is 176,940 tons. Of which, 6/9 communes have completed the harvest; the remaining are Tran Hoi commune, Khanh Binh Dong commune and Tran Van Thoi town.

Mr. Nguyen Viet Khai, Deputy Head of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Tran Van Thoi district, said: "This year's winter-spring rice crop is a bumper crop, but the price is low. The price is 2-3 thousand VND/kg lower than the same period last year, making the post-harvest profit of the farmers not high, but not to the point of loss."

According to local records, the purchase price of rice from traders at farmers' households for some varieties such as ST24, ST25 is 8,700-9,000 VND/kg, down 1,800-3,000 VND/kg compared to the same period; Dai Thom 8 variety is 6,200-6,700 VND/kg, down 1,500-2,000 VND/kg compared to the same period; OM5451, OM576 varieties, selling price at farmers' households is 6,000-6,500 VND/kg, down 1,000-1,500 VND/kg compared to the same period.

Mr. Nguyen Van Ngoan, a trader who has been purchasing rice in Tran Van Thoi district for more than 20 years, said: “This year, the purchasing price of the warehouses is too low, so the purchasing price from the people is not as high as last year. I mainly buy locally and then sell to large warehouses and factories. People do not sell much, on average I buy about 100 tons a day.”

“Currently, traders are still buying rice from the people. Many people sell it to pay for the crop, while some people store it to wait for... the price. According to statistics, the amount of rice that people leave to use is about 1,708 tons,” Mr. Nguyen Viet Khai added.

Commenting on the upcoming situation, Mr. Nguyen Van Quan said: “With this situation, rice prices will hardly be as high as last year, but the decline will not be deeper. It is predicted that after the winter-spring rice crop is completely harvested in the Mekong Delta provinces, rice prices may stabilize and increase, but not much.”

Mr. Quan analyzed: “The advantage of Vietnamese rice in general and Ca Mau in particular is mostly the production of high-quality specialty varieties. Currently, exporters are pursuing relatively demanding markets, the demand for high-quality rice, thereby contributing to increasing export output as well as the export price of our rice. The functional sector needs to guide people to produce high-quality varieties, specialty varieties and participate in cooperative production chains to produce according to the correct technical processes, both ensuring low input material prices and having products purchased at relatively stable prices, ensuring peace of mind in production”./.
