Kumquat prices for Lunar New Year 2025 skyrocket

Báo Dân ViệtBáo Dân Việt16/01/2025

Due to the impact of super typhoon Yagi, many areas of peach and kumquat trees in Binh Khe ward (Dong Trieu city, Quang Ninh province) were severely damaged. This made the price of kumquat trees higher than previous years.

Kumquat trees for Lunar New Year increase in price

For a long time, Binh Khe ward in Dong Trieu city has been famous as one of the famous flower and ornamental plant growing areas for Tet in Quang Ninh province. These days, along the roads leading to the villages of Binh Khe, everywhere you can see kumquat trees, peach trees, single flowers, lilies, lilies...

September is usually the time when garden owners start pruning and shaping kumquat and peach trees for Tet. However, super typhoon Yagi directly hit Quang Ninh last September, causing many peach and kumquat plantations here to collapse and be unable to recover.

Overcoming the difficulties and impacts of natural disasters, Binh Khe people have made efforts to restore their orchards in time to supply the Lunar New Year market. Despite the urgent time, farmers still take care of and restore flooded and fallen peach and kumquat trees day and night, hoping for a complete Tet.

While busy watering her kumquat garden, Ms. Truong Thi Thuy (Dong Do area, Binh Khe ward, Dong Trieu city) said that after storm No. 3, her family lost more than 700 kumquat trees, leaving only about 200 trees to serve the Lunar New Year.

"Before the storm hit, my family had staked and tied ropes to protect the trees, but still lost more than 3 sao with more than 700 kumquat trees. Not only my family, but also all the families growing kumquat trees here suffered losses, the least damaged were 500 trees, the most damaged were left empty-handed. Not only kumquat trees, but also Tet peach trees in Dong Do were almost completely lost due to storm No. 3, the trees that could recover had very few flowers and buds" - Ms. Thuy said.

According to Ms. Thuy, the price of kumquat trees this year tends to increase because many kumquat growing areas were damaged after storm No. 3, leading to a shortage of supply and high care costs.

"Every year, these kumquat trees, about 2m high, are sold in the garden for only 1.2 - 1.3 million VND/tree. But this year, we sell wholesale to traders for more than 2 million VND/tree, and retail for 3 - 4 million VND/tree. Up to now, we have sold about 40% of the kumquat trees. At this time, traders have started coming to the garden to choose trees, but I see that the number of traders this year is not very large, perhaps because the price of kumquat trees has increased, so traders do not dare to trade" - Ms. Thuy shared.

Before storm No. 3 hit, the family of Ms. Do Thi Muoi (Dong Do area, Binh Khe ward, Dong Trieu city) also planted stakes and tied ropes to protect more than 400 kumquat trees. But after a few hours of the storm, all of the family's kumquat trees were destroyed.

"It was very difficult to save these kumquat trees, but they are not as beautiful and satisfactory as in previous years. Every year, the family only spends about 15 million VND on fertilizer, but this year it has cost more than 40 million VND on fertilizer, root stimulants, etc. to help the trees recover quickly. Hopefully the kumquat trees will have a good price to recoup some of the invested capital," said Ms. Muoi.

Busy starting a new kumquat crop

While pruning each small kumquat branch, Mr. Le Van Kip (Dong Do area, Binh Khe ward, Dong Trieu city) said that more than 100 small kumquat trees of his family have been purchased, now all that remains is to take care of them and ensure the trees are beautiful before handing them over to traders.

In addition to taking care of the kumquat trees that have been ordered by traders, Mr. Kip is also busy taking care of the newly planted kumquat seedlings. To have perfect kumquat trees for Tet, kumquat growers have to take care of them for a whole year.

"Kumquat is a type of tree that requires both patience and technique in all stages, from pruning, shaping, to controlling the amount of water each day. In particular, to adjust the tree to bloom simultaneously, creating batches of plump, juicy, golden fruit right on time for Tet, there is also a secret. After deducting expenses, farmers do not make much profit" - Mr. Kip said.

Also going to the field to grow kumquat trees for the new crop, Ms. Do Thi Van (Dong Do area, Binh Khe ward, Dong Trieu city) said that depending on the intention, the garden owner chooses to buy 1-year-old seedlings, 2-year-old seedlings, or 3-year-old seedlings. However, this year, due to the impact of storm No. 3, the price of kumquat seedlings has increased.

Accordingly, in previous years, 50cm tall kumquat tree embryos were only bought for 30,000 - 40,000 VND/tree, but this year the price has increased to nearly 100,000 VND/tree. 3-year-old kumquat tree embryos, about 1.5m tall, in previous years cost about 100,000 VND, but this year they cost 150,000 VND. In particular, 3m tall kumquat tree embryos cost more than 300,000 VND.

"My family has started growing kumquat trees for about a month now. I am currently pruning branches, flowers and fruits to help the trees receive more light, concentrate nutrients and grow better. I hope that the new year's weather will be favorable, with a good harvest and good prices so that farmers can have a more fulfilling Tet than this year," Ms. Van shared.

Kumquat growers like Ms. Van, Mr. Kip, Ms. Muoi... all hope that kumquat prices will be good this year so that people can earn more income worthy of their hard work throughout the year, partly compensating for the damage after the storm.
