According to the Ministry of Construction , currently in Decision No. 1454/QD-TTg dated September 1, 2021 and Adjustment Decision No. 12/QD-TTg dated January 3, 2025 of the Prime Minister, there is no expressway directly connecting Lang Son and Thai Nguyen provinces. Traffic between the two localities is mainly through the expressways radiating to Hanoi and Ring Road 5 - Capital region.

In response to the proposal from the People's Committee of Lang Son province to supplement the planning of the Lang Son-Thai Nguyen expressway, the Ministry of Construction affirmed that this is a necessary need to promote regional connectivity, socio -economic development, especially strengthening the connection between the Lang Son international border gate area with the industrial center of Thai Nguyen and the Northwestern provinces.

The Lang Son-Thai Nguyen expressway is part of the strategic expressway axis Lang Son-Thai Nguyen-Tuyen Quang- Ha Giang , with a total route length of about 355km.

Of which, the 165km Tuyen Quang-Ha Giang section has been included in the planning. The Lang Son-Thai Nguyen route is expected to be about 120km long, including 70km through Lang Son province and 50km through Thai Nguyen province. The route is planned to have 4 lanes, a design speed of 100km/h, with a total estimated investment of about 29,000 billion VND.

The People's Committee of Lang Son province plans to invest in the expressway in the 2026-2030 period using medium-term public investment capital and other legal capital sources. When completed, this expressway will not only shorten travel time between the two provinces, but also open up development opportunities for industrial parks, clusters, logistics centers and urban areas along the route, while contributing to promoting border trade and import-export between Vietnam and China.

The Ministry of Construction said it will closely coordinate with the two localities in the process of researching, reviewing and adjusting the road network planning according to the Law on Planning and the direction of the Prime Minister. At the same time, it requested Lang Son and Thai Nguyen to proactively update and add routes to the provincial planning to serve as a basis for early investment implementation in the near future.
