The bright sunshine of May is also the season when sim flowers bloom. This year, visitors to the highland border commune of Hai Son (Mong Cai City, Quang Ninh Province) are somewhat surprised to witness the vast hills of sim flowers in the middle of the northeastern mountains and forests.
Sim flowers have a simple but poetic beauty thanks to their purple color mixed with pink, 5 petals surrounding the golden stamens. Sim trees grow in small bushes, familiar in many mountainous areas of Vietnam.
Sim flowers have always been considered one of the symbolic flowers of the border region, entering music with the lyrics "If you go to the border, you will see endless flowers, sim flowers in the windy and sunny hills, purple as someone is waiting" (Border sim flowers - musician Minh Quang).
With suitable terrain, the mountainous commune of Hai Son in Mong Cai City owns many patches of sim trees as high as a person's head. From 2022, the Border Sim Flower Festival will be organized by the locality, based on natural advantages and the newly planted and cared for sim hills.
In addition to the sim gardens creating beautiful landscapes in the Po Hen National Historical Site and residential areas in the area, Ma Thau Son sim hill in Luc Chan village is the area with the most sim trees, with about 5,000 trees on an area of 2 hectares.
Sim flowers bloom in unison under the sun, creating a rustic, dreamy beauty. Ms. San Moc Loc, a sim grower, said that her family planted thousands of these sim trees since the beginning of 2023, but this is the first summer that sim flowers bloom, with large, thick, beautiful flowers thanks to careful fertilization before the flowers bloom.
“Planting sim trees to replace acacia trees not only brings economic benefits such as selling fruits and collecting entrance fees, but also creates beautiful landscapes to contribute to the development of community tourism for the village and commune,” said Ms. Loc. Dao Thanh Y woman said that from the policy of developing tourism, her family opened the garden with flower viewing and fruit picking services combined with serving local cuisine and products.
For many days now, many tourists have come to the sim gardens in Hai Son to admire the beauty of the border flower, associated with the Sim Flower Festival on May 18.
Walking among the hills of sim, many people experience the feeling of returning to their childhood. Ms. Le Thi Huyen, a tourist from Hanoi, said she was very surprised to not only explore the natural scenery but also the traditional culture of the Dao and San Chi ethnic groups in the Northeastern border region: "I will definitely come back to visit the festival later."
This year is the fourth time the Border Sim Flower Festival has been held. In addition to activities for tourists, the festival is also an opportunity for ethnic people in the area to exchange cultures such as rice cake pounding competitions, spinning tops, throwing balls, blindfolded duck catching; and a contest to dress up brides of the Dao and San Chi ethnic groups.
The festival attracts tens of thousands of visitors to the highland commune of Hai Son, an opportunity to continue promoting cultural features and other destinations such as the Po Hen National Historical Site, the Dao Mural Village, the 72-room Waterfall - Trang Vinh Lake... contributing to preserving traditions and improving people's lives.
