Durian price assessment today May 19, 2025

Currently, the purchasing price of durian in the Mekong Delta region is clearly differentiated between types. Specifically, Ri6 VIP durian costs from 65,000 VND/kg, while other Ri6 types range from 45,000 to 62,000 VND/kg. Thai durian is not far behind, with VIP prices up to 100,000 VND/kg and types A, B, C from 47,000 to 85,000 VND/kg.

In the Southeast and Central Highlands regions, the prices of Ri6 and Thai durian are relatively stable, with prices similar to those in the Mekong Delta. This shows the uniformity in prices among durian growing regions.

It is predicted that in the future, durian prices may continue to increase slightly if customs clearance is favorable and demand from the Chinese market remains stable. However, farmers need to pay attention to product quality and control chemical residues to avoid technical warnings, which will directly affect export capacity and prices.

If the “mass planting” situation is not controlled, it may lead to oversupply and durian prices will drop sharply in the coming months. Therefore, close cooperation with businesses and improving production processes are essential to ensure sustainable value for Vietnamese durian products in the future.

Durian price news today May 19, 2025

Domestic durian prices today show positive signs, but the export market is still facing many challenges. According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD), in the first 4 months of 2025, Vietnam's fruit and vegetable exports reached only 1.62 billion USD, down 14% compared to the same period last year. In particular, durian only reached 130 million USD, much lower than the 500 million USD in the same period in 2024.

Meanwhile, Thailand is dominating with 500 containers of durian cleared to China every day, equivalent to 10,000 tons. Thailand's quality control system is very strict, helping the rate of returned goods to be almost zero. China has recognized 10 testing centers in Thailand, while Vietnam has only 9 centers, but the quality control capacity is still uneven.

Thailand has also been quick to organize online fairs and cooperate with Chinese celebrities to promote products, creating a clear competitive advantage that Vietnam has yet to catch up with.

With the durian growing area exceeding 160,000 hectares, double the planned area by 2030, the Vietnamese durian industry needs to be restructured soon. The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development recommends developing processed durian (such as frozen) to reduce pressure on the fresh market, while also establishing growing area codes and traceability.

Without a change in the direction of professionalism, Vietnam will continue to lose market share to Thailand, a country that has gained the trust of its largest partner, China.

In addition, Cambodia has just become the latest Southeast Asian country to be licensed by China to export fresh durian, joining the nearly $7 billion durian "playground" in China. Although it does not yet have a prominent brand, Cambodia has the advantage of low production costs and increasingly improved growing techniques.

To maintain and develop the durian market, Vietnam needs to quickly improve product quality and export strategy, in order to compete not only with Thailand but also with other countries in the region.
