Latest durian price news

Vietnamese durian prices are plummeting due to concerns over the discovery of cadmium and O-yellow in Thai durian. However, the main reason for the market turmoil is China's move to increase the quality inspection rate of Vietnamese durian to 100%. With only 20 qualified testing laboratories, Vietnam is facing a shortage of inspection capacity, leading to delays in customs clearance, backlogs of goods and a serious drop in domestic prices.

According to the General Secretary of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association, many durian shipments have been given technical warnings and customs clearance has been suspended due to not meeting China's strict standards. Meanwhile, Thailand has proactively improved its procedures, achieving stable exports of 500 containers/day (equivalent to 10,000 tons), and a very low rate of returned goods.

The problem comes not only from market demand but also from within the Vietnamese durian industry. Uneven quality in growing areas, lax internal control procedures and asynchronous post-inspection are major barriers. To overcome this, Vietnam needs to quickly upgrade its testing system, standardize production processes and strengthen quality monitoring to regain its position in the export market.
