Admitted to the hospital in a state of drowsiness, numbness in limbs, severe headache, crooked mouth and paralysis on the left side of the body, patient Tran Van D, 36 years old, Cap Tien commune (Son Duong) after being scanned and doing necessary tests, doctors concluded that he had a stroke due to cerebral vascular occlusion. The cause is believed to be dehydration, sudden increase in body temperature leading to blood thickening and blood clot formation causing vascular occlusion. The patient's family said that Mr. D. was healthy, had no history of illness or high blood pressure. Before the stroke, he was working outdoors in temperatures of nearly 38 degrees Celsius. Fortunately, he was taken to the emergency room in time and overcame the critical condition, but it will take a long time to recover his motor and language functions.
Regular health check-ups help people prevent the risk of stroke.
According to records at the Provincial General Hospital, since the beginning of May, when the severe heat began, the number of patients hospitalized due to stroke increased. Notably, there was a case of only 27 years old, no underlying disease, and previously completely normal. Doctor Dao Ngoc Viet, Head of the Emergency Department, Provincial General Hospital said: “Stroke is also known as cerebrovascular accident, the disease can happen to anyone, especially the rate increases for patients with underlying diseases such as high blood pressure, diabetes, cardiovascular disease. Over the past month, the number of stroke patients has increased, the department has received 125 cases of stroke with different levels, in which, many cases are under 45 years old. This warns of the increasing risk of stroke in young people. Notably, the number of stroke patients brought to the emergency room during the “golden hour” (4-5 hours after the stroke) is very low, making treatment difficult.”
The most obvious symptoms of a stroke are a crooked mouth, a deviated philtrum, changes in voice, slurred speech or slurred speech, difficulty speaking, severe pain or headache, pain that may not subside despite the use of pain relievers, and numbness in the limbs.
If in the past, stroke mainly occurred in the elderly, people with some underlying diseases such as high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, then in recent years this disease has shown a rejuvenation. The rate of people under 45 years old hospitalized for stroke is increasing, especially during hot months. Common signs of stroke in young people are often that the patient cannot lift both arms above the head at the same time, loss of vision, blurred vision, dizziness, unclear vision... Explaining the cause of the increase in stroke in young people, Dr. CKI Quang Van Hung, Department of Intensive Care, Anti-Poisoning - Artificial Kidney, Phuong Bac General Hospital said: "The common risk factors of young people today are due to unhealthy lifestyles, unscientific diet, staying up late, abusing stimulants such as alcohol, tobacco, prolonged stress leading to underlying diseases that are not detected. In addition, special causes such as: Cerebral vascular malformations, blood clotting disorders, use of contraceptives in young women are factors that lead to stroke. People working outdoors in weather above 37 degrees Celsius cause circulatory failure, hypotension, electrolyte disturbances leading to dangerous cardiovascular events...".
Stroke has a very high mortality rate and leaves many serious sequelae. Therefore, early recognition of abnormal signs, maintaining a healthy lifestyle and raising awareness of disease prevention will be the key to limiting the increase in strokes. People need to comply with regular health check-ups; have a scientific diet, drink enough water, and increase physical exercise to improve resistance. For stroke patients, family members need to quickly take them to the nearest medical facility for timely treatment; absolutely do not let stroke patients eat or drink any medicine, do not massage, acupressure, or prick and squeeze blood from the fingertips or behind the ears because these measures are ineffective.
