World steel prices

On the Shanghai exchange, rebar prices increased by 1.38%, currently trading at 3,091 CNY/ton at 8:00 (Vietnam time) on Tuesday (May 13).

Steel and iron ore prices rose in the first session of the week as the US and China reached a new economic consensus. The Shanghai rebar contract rose 42 yuan to 3,191 yuan/ton.

In Dalian, September iron ore prices rose 1.51% to 707 yuan/ton. On the Singapore Exchange, June contracts rose 1.41% to 98.3 USD/ton.

Prices were supported by steady demand and positive margins from steel mills. Average daily hot metal output of 2.46 million tonnes marked the highest level since October 2023.

Still, the market remains volatile amid concerns about higher US tariffs and China’s tightening of production, with seaborne sugar prices now down 11% from their February peak.

Other steel products on the Shanghai Futures Exchange also rose: hot-rolled coil +0.38%, stainless steel rose sharply by 1.18%. Meanwhile, coking coal and coke prices continued to fall.
