Rebar on the Shanghai Futures Exchange (SHFE) for December 2025 delivery rose 17 yuan to 2,985 yuan/t.

Iron ore futures continued to decline for a second straight session and are on track to record a weekly decline, as US President Donald Trump’s plan to impose a 50% tariff on a new batch of “steel derivatives” added to the market pressure.

The most-traded September iron ore contract on the Dalian Commodity Exchange (DCE) fell 0.14 percent to 703 yuan ($97.90) a tonne, down 0.7 percent for the week.

On the Singapore Exchange, the benchmark iron ore price for July delivery (SZZFN5) fell 0.15% to $94.40 a tonne, down 1.2% for the week so far.

The contract has remained below the psychologically important $100 threshold for nearly a month and hit a fresh low since April 10 at $93.65 earlier in the session.

A series of imported household appliances including dishwashers, washing machines, refrigerators... will be subject to a 50% steel tax under US President Donald Trump's new policy, effective from June 23.

However, two analysts in China (who asked not to be named for confidentiality reasons) said that the current reaction is mainly emotional and will not have a significant impact on the Chinese steel market in the short term, as such policy effects usually take time to spread.

Demand for iron ore, a key raw material for steel production, is still considered solid, thereby helping to curb the decline.

Average daily hot metal output, a key indicator of iron ore demand, held around 2.42 million tonnes in the week ended June 12, the third consecutive week it has remained around this level, according to data from consultancy Mysteel.

Investment bank China International Capital Corporation (CICC) forecasts that China's steel exports this year are likely to increase 1.2% year-on-year to 112 million tonnes, while domestic steel consumption is estimated to fall 1% year-on-year.

Meanwhile, other steelmaking raw materials on the DCE recorded slight increases, with coking coal and coke prices (DCJcv1) up 0.06% and 0.75%, respectively.

On the Shanghai Futures Exchange, most steel futures fell. Specifically, rebar fell 0.2%, hot-rolled coil fell 0.26%, stainless steel edged up 0.24%; only steel bars (SWRcv1) recorded an increase of 0.27%.
