Steel prices on the exchange
Rebar on the Shanghai Futures Exchange (SHFE) for December 2025 delivery rose 1 yuan to 2,984 yuan/t.
Iron ore futures edged up on Tuesday, supported by strong demand for the steelmaking material, although concerns over US steel tariffs capped gains.
The most-traded September iron ore contract on China's Dalian Commodity Exchange (DCE) rose 0.21% to 704.5 yuan ($98.11) a tonne.
Benchmark iron ore for July delivery (SZZFN5) on the Singapore Exchange rose 0.31% to $94.45 a tonne.
About 60% of blast furnace steel mills in China reported positive profit margins as of June 12, data from consultancy Mysteel showed.
Average daily hot metal output, often used as a gauge of iron ore demand, remained steady on the week at around 2.42 million tonnes as of June 13, according to Mysteel data.
However, China's crude steel output fell sharply in May from a year earlier, surprising analysts and prompting steelmakers to further reduce output this year in line with Beijing's move to cut output in the sector.
Meanwhile, the country's factory output growth hit a six-month low in May, while retail sales accelerated.
On the trade front, a range of imported home appliances, including dishwashers, washing machines, refrigerators... will be subject to US President Donald Trump's 50% steel tariff from June 23.
Overall, China's new home prices fell in May, extending a two-year slump, official data showed on Monday, highlighting challenges in the sector despite several rounds of policy support measures.
Other steelmaking components on the DCE gained, with metallurgical coal and coking coal (DCJcv1) up 2.84% and 1.9%, respectively.
Most steel benchmarks on the Shanghai Futures Exchange rose. Rebar rose 0.98%, hot-rolled coil rose 1.07%, wire rod (SWRcv1) edged up 0.15%, while stainless steel edged down 0.08%.
