Steel prices today recorded, domestic market kept selling prices unchanged; iron ore increased due to strong steel demand in China.
World market
Rebar on the Shanghai Futures Exchange (SHFE) for March 2026 delivery rose 38 yuan to 3,204 yuan/t.
Iron ore futures rose, supported by strong steel demand amid output curbs in China's top steelmaking regions.
The most-traded September iron ore contract on China's Dalian Commodity Exchange (DCE) rose 1.3% to 781.5 yuan ($108.87) a tonne.
Iron ore futures for August delivery (SZZFQ5) on the Singapore Exchange rose 0.66% to $100.6 a tonne.
Steel output has recovered in China, helped by rapid stockpiling of construction materials, strong manufacturing demand and sustained growth in steel exports, brokerage Galaxy Futures said in a report.
Galaxy said major steel-producing regions Shanxi and Tangshan have begun implementing output curbs.
Iron ore exports from top suppliers Australia and Brazil have fallen after rising sharply at the end of the previous quarter, analysts said.
Rio Tinto posted its highest second-quarter iron ore output since 2018, but shipments missed analysts' forecasts and hit their lowest first-half level since 2014 due to weather-related disruptions.
Improving factory margins are starting to boost demand optimism, ANZ analysts said in a report.
Meanwhile, BHP said the cost of building a “green iron” industry in Australia remains too high, even as Australia and China reached an agreement this week to cooperate on decarbonising the steel supply chain.
Australia, which supplies 60% of China's iron ore needs, produces lower-grade iron ore that cannot be processed directly into steel using renewable energy.
Other steelmaking raw materials on the DCE also fell, with coking coal and coke (DCJcv1) down 0.66% and 0.83%, respectively.
Most steel benchmarks on the Shanghai Futures Exchange rose. Rebar rose 0.26%, hot-rolled coil rose 0.68%, wire rod (SWRcv1) rose 0.39% and stainless steel fell 0.08%.
