Steel prices on the exchange
Rebar on the Shanghai Futures Exchange (SHFE) for October 2025 delivery fell 2 yuan to 3,061 yuan/t.
Iron ore futures traded in a narrow range, as investors weighed a near-term recovery in demand for the steelmaking ingredient against dismal economic data from top consumer China.
The most-traded September iron ore contract on China's Dalian Commodity Exchange (DCE) was unchanged at 723.5 yuan ($100.17) a tonne.
Benchmark iron ore for June delivery (SZZFM5) on the Singapore Exchange edged up 0.15 percent to $99.60 a tonne.
"Output at Chinese iron ore miners continued to rise last week as operations resumed at more mines," Mysteel consultancy said.
Total iron ore concentrate production increased 2% week-on-week to an average of 498,800 tonnes a day, according to data from Mysteel.
Hot metal output, often used to gauge iron ore demand, fell 0.35% from the previous month to 2.45 million tonnes, according to brokerage Everbright Futures.
Although hot metal output fell slightly from the previous month, output remained relatively high and demand for steel in manufacturing continued to rise, according to brokerage Galaxy Futures.
On the supply side, iron ore shipments from major producers Australia and Brazil rose 9.53% month-on-month to 33.48 million tonnes, brokerage Hexun Futures said in a note.
Overall, sentiment was also weighed down by slowing growth in factory output and Chinese retail sales data that missed expectations while new home prices continued to stagnate.
China's crude steel output fell 7% in April from March, although output remained at a relatively high level, data released on Monday showed.
Other steelmaking components on the DCE also fell, with metallurgical coal and coking coal (DCJcv1) down 0.76% and 0.98%, respectively.
Steel benchmarks on the Shanghai Futures Exchange fell. Rebar fell 0.39%, hot-rolled coil fell 0.19%, wire rod (SWRcv1) fell 0.54% and stainless steel fell nearly 1%.
