The National Assembly "finalized" March 15, 2026 as the election date for the 16th National Assembly.

On the morning of May 21, the 9th Session of the 15th National Assembly passed a Resolution on shortening the term of the 15th National Assembly and People's Councils at all levels for the 2021-2026 term; Election Day for deputies to the 16th National Assembly and People's Councils at all levels for the 2026-2031 term, with 449/449 deputies participating in the vote in favor, reaching a rate of 100%.

According to the recently passed Resolution, the election day for the 16th National Assembly and People's Councils at all levels for the 2026-2031 term will be held on Sunday, March 15, 2026, and the first session of the 16th National Assembly will be convened no later than 60 days from the election date. For People's Councils at all levels, the first session will be convened no later than 45 days from the election date.

The Resolution also requests the National Assembly Standing Committee, the Government, the Central Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front, the Supreme People's Court, the Supreme People's Procuracy, the Nationalities Council , the National Assembly Committees, the National Assembly delegations, the National Assembly deputies, the People's Councils, the People's Council deputies, and relevant agencies and organizations within the scope of their functions and tasks to promptly and fully implement the contents of the Resolution.
