November 5: Election Day.
Late November: It can take days to know election results, especially if the results are very close in battleground states. The tightest races always get the most attention, but also take the longest to resolve.
Voting by mail is also one of the factors that makes the vote counting process take longer, especially as more and more Americans choose this form of voting.
January 6, 2025: The US Vice President will preside over the counting of the Electoral College votes in a joint session of the US Congress , announce the results, and declare who has won the election.
Ahead of the vote count on January 6, 2021, then-President Trump criticized Vice President Mike Pence for refusing to stop the US Congress from certifying Mr. Biden's victory.
On that day, the US Capitol was attacked by rioters. Both houses of the US Congress later resumed their work and certified Mr. Biden's victory.
Since then, Congress has passed the Election Reconciliation and Presidential Transition Improvement Act of 2022, which requires the approval of one-fifths of the House and Senate to consider a challenge to a state's election results.
January 20: The inauguration of the winning President and Vice President of the US election takes place. At this ceremony, the winner and his or her "vice president" will officially take the oath of office.
