Steel prices on the exchange
Rebar on the Shanghai Futures Exchange (SHFE) for December 2025 delivery fell 28 yuan to 3,114 yuan a tonne.
China’s iron ore futures were steady at 705 yuan a tonne, continuing to trade in a narrow range after hitting a six-month low of 690 yuan last month. Unfavorable macroeconomic conditions continue to weigh on the outlook for the domestic construction and manufacturing sectors.
China’s rebar futures rose to 3,095 yuan a tonne – their highest in a month – after falling to 3,020 yuan, their lowest in seven months since late April, on expectations of tight supply.
Major steelmakers, including Baosteel – the world's top producer – have signaled that Beijing could soon order nationwide output cuts to combat oversupply and weak demand.
The manufacturing PMI released by China's National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) fell to a 16-month low in April, as new export orders fell the most since 2022, adding pressure to steel demand.
In addition, concerns about persistently weak consumer demand are weighing on property prices, increasing the risk of industry defaults and threatening to wipe out a key source of global demand for steel.
China's government said overcapacity at steel mills could lead to production cuts by 2025, putting pressure on blast furnace demand for iron ore.
However, China's crude steel output in March still increased by 3.6% year-on-year to 93 million tonnes.
On the policy front, multiple cuts in key interest rates from the People's Bank of China helped prevent a deeper market decline, providing some support to the economy as it prepares to enter trade talks with the US.
