Pepper price today May 18 in the world market
In the world market, based on quotes from export enterprises and export prices in various countries, the International Pepper Association (IPC) has updated the prices of all types of pepper traded in the international market on May 17 (local time) as follows:
Indonesia's Lampung black pepper price remained unchanged from yesterday at $7,301 per tonne. Meanwhile, Muntok white pepper price remained unchanged from yesterday at $10,051 per tonne.
Brazilian black pepper ASTA 570 price remained unchanged from yesterday at $6,800/mt.
Malaysia’s ASTA black pepper price remained unchanged from yesterday at $9,200/ton. Meanwhile, the country’s ASTA white pepper price remained stable from yesterday at $11,900/ton.
Prices of all types of pepper in Vietnam remained unchanged compared to yesterday. Of which, the price of 500 gr/l black pepper in Vietnam reached 6,700 USD/ton; 550 gr/l reached 6,800 USD/ton.
Similarly, Vietnam's white pepper price remained unchanged from yesterday at $9,700/ton.
Some forecasts suggest that pepper prices may increase slightly from mid-May to early June 2025. The main reason is that businesses are speeding up the completion of delivery contracts in the second quarter and import demand is increasing from major markets such as Europe and the Middle East.
However, according to the Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association, the domestic market has not yet shown any clear momentum for price increases. Slow consumption, combined with traders’ wait-and-see attitude, has kept prices from fluctuating much.
Experts say that after the US applied a reciprocal tax policy, Vietnamese pepper is facing great competitive pressure from Brazil and Indonesia, two countries with lower tax rates, reducing the attractiveness of Vietnamese pepper in the US market.
In the world market, since the beginning of May 2025, pepper prices have clearly differentiated between producing countries. In Indonesia, pepper prices are on an upward trend. Meanwhile, Vietnam, Malaysia and Brazil have recorded a slight decrease compared to the beginning of April. In Brazil, the current price level remains stable, without much fluctuation.
In the second quarter, Vietnamese pepper is subject to a 10% tax when exported to the US. It is expected that in the third quarter, this tax rate may increase to 25% to 30%, causing Vietnamese pepper to lose its competitive advantage in this important market.
Faced with unpredictable developments, the Government has assigned the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment to coordinate with the Ministry of Finance and relevant agencies to study solutions to support temporary storage of agricultural products such as rice, coffee and pepper. The goal is to stabilize prices and income for farmers during the peak harvest period.
The Government also requested ministries, sectors and localities to closely monitor global trade developments, proactively and flexibly manage and provide timely information to support businesses in coping with fluctuations from international trade instability.
