As gold prices hover above $3,350, prominent asset manager Adrian Day has warned that the market is undervaluing mining stocks and ignoring the risk of a liquidity crunch that could force the US Federal Reserve to resume quantitative easing (QE) as early as September.
“There’s hardly a negative scenario for gold,” Adrian Day told Kitco News, citing central bank buying, Chinese investors hedging against the yuan’s devaluation and rising financial concerns as key drivers of gold’s future price gains.
The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) this week cut its global growth forecast, saying that US tariffs under President Donald Trump have disrupted trade and dragged down GDP by 1.6%. This sent the dollar sharply lower and gold up for a third consecutive week.
Meanwhile, according to analysts, gold prices will still face many fluctuations in the coming time. The reason is that the market is waiting for news about the next discussions between the US and China on trade.
Investors are also watching U.S. non-farm payrolls data due later this week and a series of speeches by Federal Reserve officials for clues on interest rate policy. If the news is positive, gold prices will cool down, but if there are new uncertainties, gold prices will rise.
Gold, a safe haven asset in times of political and economic uncertainty, tends to thrive in low-interest-rate environments. Over the past year, the precious metal has gained nearly 45%.
