The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) said oil supplies from the United States and non-OPEC+ producers are forecast to rise by about 800,000 barrels per day (bpd) in 2025, lower than the 900,000 bpd forecast last month.
“Clearly, the API crude oil inventory build is not bullish for oil prices. However, the API report also showed some positives, such as a sharp decline in refined product runs,” said UBS analyst Giovanni Staunovo.
According to market sources citing data from the American Petroleum Institute (API), US crude oil inventories rose by 4.3 million barrels in the week ending May 9. Meanwhile, gasoline inventories fell by 1.4 million barrels and distillate inventories (such as diesel and heating oil) fell by 3.7 million barrels.
The drop in gasoline inventories comes as many countries prepare to enter the Northern Hemisphere's summer driving season, when fuel consumption peaks.
In a report published Tuesday evening, experts from Roth Capital Markets said that the decrease in oil products in the API report is a positive signal for the oil market in the long term, because it shows that supply is lower than demand.
Official weekly inventory data from the US Energy Information Administration (EIA) is due out on Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. EDT (14:30 GMT).
A Reuters survey ahead of the release showed U.S. crude and gasoline inventories likely fell last week, while distillate inventories likely rose.
Overall, both oil benchmarks are hovering near two-week highs hit in the previous session.
“Oil prices have been rising nicely over the past few days… so maybe this is the time for some investors to take profits,” Mr. Staunovo added.
However, the rise in oil prices was still restrained by concerns about consumption demand.
Chicago Federal Reserve Bank President Austan Goolsbee said that the “cooler” consumer inflation data in April did not fully reflect the impact of the US import tariff hike, and more data is needed to determine the direction of prices and the economy .
