In the highland village of Ngai Tro, Den Sang commune, over 90% of the population are ethnic Dao people.

We arrived at Ngai Tro village, Den Sang commune, on a rare sunny day in the highland winter. After many days of fog, the warm sunshine not only dispelled the damp chill but also brightened the landscape, bringing new life to this land.

The newly completed Den Sang - Y Ty road, with its smooth asphalt surface, has significantly shortened travel time, bringing joy and hope to the local people.

Village head Tan Lao Lo shared: "The villagers have been waiting for this road for many years. Now that the road is open, households with better economic conditions are starting to build new houses and buy vehicles to facilitate travel and transport goods. This is a crucial turning point for Ngai Tro village to develop."

The cold-water fish farming model has contributed to increasing the income of many households in Ngai Tro village, Den Sang commune.

Ngai Tro village is one of the particularly disadvantaged villages in Den Sang commune, with 130 households, mainly Dao ethnic people. The residential areas are scattered on high mountain slopes, and the fragmented terrain made transportation very difficult in the past, which consequently limited the exploitation of the local economic potential for a long time.

However, Ngai Tro is blessed with a clean climate and cool water from the pristine forests at an altitude of nearly 2,000 meters above sea level. This creates favorable conditions for developing cold-water fish farming. To date, 20 households in the village are engaged in sturgeon farming.

The cold-water fish market is volatile, but people are still making efforts to maintain their fish stocks.

Mr. Phung Lao U, one of the pioneers in developing the cold-water fish farming model in Ngai Tro village, said: "My family currently has 9 ponds, harvesting about 15 tons of sturgeon each year. Although sturgeon prices have fluctuated recently, the villagers are still trying to maintain their fish stocks, hoping that the Den Sang cold-water fish brand will develop sustainably, helping the fish farming industry to stabilize again soon."

Besides developing cold-water fish farming models, the people of Ngai Tro also take advantage of the forest to implement many other economic models, both increasing income and protecting the forest.

The family of Mr. Ly Kim Ngan is one of the exemplary households with a model of beekeeping for honey production under the forest canopy. Having been involved in beekeeping for over 20 years, Mr. Ngan said: "Forest flowers bloom all year round, one season follows another, so there's always honey to harvest. The forest has many valuable medicinal herbs, which makes honey even more valuable."

At one point, Ngan's family kept up to 30 beehives; traders from many places came to buy them, providing his family with a stable source of income.

Driven by the belief that forests are essential for economic development, the people of Ngai Tro village have always prioritized protecting and preserving the forest.

Village head Tan Lao Lo said: "The forest is our source of life, a protective shield for our people. Thanks to the forest, we have clean water, a cool climate, and valuable products to develop our economy."

Ngai Tro has great potential for developing community-based tourism .

In addition to its agricultural economic models, Ngai Tro village also possesses significant potential for community tourism development. With scenic spots such as Tien Pond, Tien Waterfall, ancient Shan tea forests, and the unique culture of the Dao ethnic group, it promises to become an attractive destination in the future.

Once the road is completed, tourism tours connecting Y Tý and Dền Sáng will create opportunities for local people to benefit from tourism. The natural landscape, indigenous culture, and distinctive cuisine of the village will be more widely promoted to tourists from within and outside the province.

Village head Tan Lao Lo shared: "Agricultural economic models have been effective, but not every household has the resources to implement them, and the number of poor households in the village remains high. Therefore, along with investing in transportation infrastructure, developing tourism will give people the opportunity to participate in related services. This will be key to the village continuing to reduce the number of poor households in the future."

With the unity of the people and the attention to infrastructure investment and support from the local government, the problem of poverty alleviation in the mountainous Ngai Tro is gradually finding a solution. Not only has the appearance of this highland village changed, but it has also opened up prospects for a prosperous and sustainable life for the Dao ethnic people.
